Does parenting ever get easier?
For Julius Babao and Tintin Bersola, parenting is a continuous learning process.
"May mga things that you never thought na malalaman mo about kids that you learn when they're growing up," Julius told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) during a short exclusive interview at a recent home exhibit in Shangri-La Mall.
"Parang medyo hindi mo aakalain, 'Ah, ganon pala 'yon, 'no?'
"Parang nung bata din pala ako, ganito ako. 'Tapos ngayon, ganito rin sila."
Julius and Tintin have two kids: Anya, 12, and Nio, 7.
At this stage, the challenges brought by the digital age have become more apparent than before.
Julius continued, "Nag-iiba rin, nag-a-adapt din sa times.
"People are so exposed to social media, to the Internet. Nagbago na, e.
"Hindi tulad sa 'min before when every afternoon, we just play outside the house.
"Now, no more. Parang they are so engrossed sa kanilang gadgets."
Tintin echoed, "Being a parent of a techie generation spells a lot of difference kasi nga, sabi ni Julius, nasanay kami sa Chinese garter, tumbang preso, patintero."
But somehow, their generational gap doesn't hinder Julius and Tintin from being like a barkada to their kids.
Julius remarked, "Ako, what I know is, we're both friends with our kids.
"We try to relate to them. We try to understand para kapag nag-uusap kami, alam namin kung anong trip nila.
"Dapat constant communication, 'yon yung importante."
THE TEEN YEARS. With their eldest child Anya on the onset of her teenage life, Julius admitted that he doesn't exactly look forward to it.
Tintin quipped to her husband, "[Si Anya] nasa cusp na of being a teenager, so magkakaroon na ng, eventually, crushes!
"I wonder how he'll deal with it kasi only girl! Kaya ayaw niya siguro makita teen years nito!"
For her part, Tintin is also curious to see how Anya and Nio will turn out as teens.
She said, "Iba e to raise kids na marami masyadong social pressures.
"Kapag teen na 'yan, baka lagi na nasa labas ng bahay, or, you know, with friends on a Saturday.
"Hindi na sila na katulad nito [Nio] na kasama namin."
With that mind, Julius and Tintin make sure each family day counts, especially those times spent at home.
She intoned, "Right now, that's why we make our home very livable and fun.
"We want them to have good memories in a very fun and warm home."
