At the Watsons event, Ruffa Gutierrez talks about the importance of nourishing the skin with vitamins A, C, E, and collagen.

Ruffa Gutierrez’s parenting style is "somewhere in the middle."

This means she's not too strict and intrusive. She sets rules, but also believes in compromise.

At the Time To Renew event of Watsons, the former beauty queen told (Philippine Entertainment Portal) in an exclusive interview that she is "a cool mom and also a disciplinarian.”

She elaborated, "Because you know naman that I raised them on my own so kelangan cool.

"I want them to feel that they can share things with me, be like a barkada...

"So they actually get to argue with me sometimes."

Recently, her youngest daughter Venice complained about being the only one in her class who doesn't have a smartphone.

Ruffa's reaction to this was: "Really? Venice, when I was 17, dun lang ako nagkaroon ng unang phone.

"Sabi ko, I was able to work, had a great life, I embraced my childhood with all my toys.

"So dapat ikaw din, 17."

However, her 12-year-old daughter countered the argument by enumerating the benefits of owning a mobile phone, thus convincing her mom to reconsider her rules about gadgets.

"So finally, I gave her my old phone."

Ruffa added, "You have to listen din kasi. My style is not like, ako parati masusunod. It's also important to know what they're thinking."

She also promised Venice, whose birthday is this coming September 11: "Pagdating niya ng 13, ilo-launch niya ang kanyang Instagram."

THE DISCIPLINARIAN MOM. While Ruffa knows when to reach a compromise with her daughters, it doesn't mean she's the type to bend the rules so easily.

"Kelangan matakot din sila sa akin. Otherwise, they won't take me seriously.

"So I am in the middle, you know.

"So I love them, I take care of them, but when I know that they’re doing something wrong, they’re misbehaving, then I’m also there to discipline them."

Does she spank them?

She paused, before answering, "Well, I don't believe in that so much pero kung kailangan, you know, kung kailangan, maybe.

"I dunno. We'll see.

"I am not saying I won't. Kasi siyempre, depende sa sitwasyon."

But she does get mad.

"Yes, nagagalit ako," Ruffa confirms.

Usually, it's when they fail to do the "simple things" such as switching off appliances.

Ruffa related, "Just like the other day, they left the aircon on, they left the ilaw was on. My gosh, sabi ko, ‘Magtipid kayo sa kuryente.’

"You know little things like that.

"Iniwan ba namang bukas ang aircon, buong araw, pati ilaw.

"So sabi ko, ‘Ang taas ng bill sa kuryente nowadays,’ and as a single mom, those little things, they're very simple to do naman, they mean a lot.

"So easy to do, patayin lang ang ilaw at kuryente bago kayo lumabas ng kuwarto. I make sure na alam nila 'yon."

What will Ruffa do when her daughters forget her "very simple bilin?"

"Kung hindi, ila-lock ko yung kuwarto, dun sila matulog sa sala na walang aircon. O, di ba. So stress sila."

Despite such "pasaway" attitude, the beauty queen-mom reiterates that Lorin and Venice are nice kids.

"Hindi naman sila grabeng mag-misbehave," she proudly stressed.
