Say Alonzo can finally complete her sleep after three years

On Philips MOM for moms app: "I'm so pro for moms kasi ako naaawa ako dun sa mga ibang kababayan natin na talagang walang pera na magpacheck-up 'tapos malayo pa yung pupuntahan. So ito makakatulong talaga and wala nang risk sa mga bata. Lalo na kunwari ang tagal nilang malalaman kung anong nangyari ganyan."

For over a month now, Say Alonzo has been getting enough sleep.

That was after she made the hard decision to wean her son Asher Kane, whom she exclusively breastfeed for three years.

"Kasi ever since he was born, never pa akong nagkaroon ng eight hours of sleep na diretso. It was only two times na five hours straight kasi five hours din siya straight matulog,” said the Pinoy Big Brother alumna."

Since she gave birth to her son on October 2, 2014, she had been directly breastfeeding her.

"Never mixed at saka direct,” she proudly told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment portal) at the recent media launch of Philips MOM for moms app.

She continued, “He never took a bottle, not even breastmilk from a bottle.

"So before, like, I couldn’t really work or do taping or anything, so I just went back to hosting three months after he was born, hosting events.

"And yung mga events, sinasama ko siya lalo na pag may…pag maganda yung stand-by area, most of the time hotels naman, sama siya, dun siya sa room.

"Kasi kailangan every two hours, nakaka-break, ayaw niya talaga yung bote as in hanggang three years old siya nung last month, October.

“Ginagamit niya as comfort during the night."

Say became emotional when asked to recall the moment she weaned her boy.

“I talked to him. I said, 'Asher, mommy gonna stop breastfeeding cause mommy’s getting sick na, mommy needs to sleep.”

“So I talked to him, I still remember the last time that we… nag-breastfeed ako. Naiiyak ako.

“Ah, 10:15, October 19, sabi ko, 'This is the last, but mommy loves you very much.

"Naiiyak ako, ano ba iyan!"

And that was the reason she stayed fit?

“Siguro, [but] now, I need to watch what I eat.

"Nasanay ako na nag-breastfeed ako, I could eat whatever I want. Now, I have to watch it.”

But more than maintaining her weight, Say was more concerned about the health of her son.

“Breastfeeding is so important kasi sa awa ng Diyos, my son, he’s very healthy.”

He never got sick?

I’m very thankful for that.

“Siguro nakatulong yung three years na pagbi-breastfeed sa kanya, and natutuwa talaga ako na parang yung lahat ng hirap ko na hindi ako natutulog, at least may naibigay ako sa kanya hanggang paglaki niya na healthy siya.”

According to BabyCenter.com, "Breast milk is best for your baby, and the benefits of breastfeeding extend well beyond basic nutrition.

"In addition to containing all the vitamins and nutrients your baby needs in the first six months of life, breast milk is packed with disease-fighting substances that protect your baby from illness."

DO NOT GIVE UP. And just like most new moms, she initially had a problem: Asher had a hard time latching.

"I just didn’t give up,” the 38-year-old celebrity said.

She continued, "Of course it was hard. When it comes to newborn, they don’t know how to latch, di ba?

"So I just talagang tiyaga-tiyaga lang kasi and then I was…Umiiyak ako sa asawa ko, nag-self-pity ako, nasaabi ko lahat na parang tulog ka kasi.

“'Tapos next day, sabi ko, ‘Ano nang nangyayari sa ’kin? Ako na lang nag-aalaga, ako sa gabi, lahat!

"Wala, self-pity talaga ako!”

Her ordeal went on for three weeks, but she kept on trying until "marunong na siya mag-latch and then malakas na siyamag-milk.”

It was her first major victory then as a mom.

She also remembered how Jolina Magdangal’s words of encouragement helped her.

“Si Jolina, I saw her in a guesting and she told me not to give up. It was very helpful. We’re not very close, but when I, when she told me na wag ka mag-give up, si Pele, ganyan-ganyan, sabi ko, 'My gosh she can be an artista and breastfeed, maybe I can be an artista and breastfeed.’

“And sabi niya, ‘Wag ka mahiya, puwede kang mag-taping, dalhin mo yung crib,' pero ako hanggang ngayon hiya pa rin ako.

"Pero hindi ko… kasi siyempre, hindi naman ako big star 'tapos ang daming dala-dala sa taping so hindi na rin ako nagti-taping.

“But anyway, so yun hindi talaga ako nag-give up kasi alam ko yung importance ng breastfeeding sa child ko.

"I would read forums and then it really helped me out reading other mom’s stories…na-empower ako by reading forums."

DIVISION OF LABOR. Say mentioned about being the only one awake during the night. Didn’t she and husband Ryan Tordesillas ever attempt to share the night-feeding duties?

“Ah, that was the first few weeks kasi we have to understand, he has corporate job, ako yung wala naman akong job, ano lang naman ako mag-aalaga.

“So yung hindi ako natutulog sa gabi, ganyan, nag self-pity lang talaga ako kasi nakikita ko siya himbing-himbing tulog 'tapos ako nagbi-breastfeed ng bata.”

But eventually, she decided to just directly breastfeed Asher since she could catch a nap during the day.

"Meron siyang time na tutulong siya sa akin, pero ako mismo nagsasabi na, 'No matulog ka na, cause you have to wake up at 6 a.m., be at the office by 8 na.m.

"He has a corporate job. Ako naman, wala naman akong job nun, nag-aalaga lang ako ng bata.

“So yung division of labor, okay lang naman, and talagang you know he really takes good care of us, wala naman akong job, di ba, so he really takes care of us, and siya gumagastos lahat, so okay lang…

“Pagdating niya sa bahay, laru-laro ng baby 'tapos pag weekends, we go out of town or staycation. He really makes it up kasi during the  day, dun siya sa office.

“But he’s a really good man.”

And Say would not trade places with anyone.

She proudly said, "I love being a mom. I’ve been a hands-on mom ever since after he was born."
