Growth of Tourism in El Nido
Over the past decade, El Nido has evolved from a favorite destination among backpackers and adventurous travelers into a globally recognized tourism hotspot that now welcomes families and organized tour groups from around the world.
Hitesh Sampat, Lime Resort El Nido General Manager, has witnessed this transformation firsthand.
He shared in an exlcusive interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal): "Tourism has changed gears from backpackers to more organized, adventurous, and globally recognized destination travellers from diversified cultures, with multiple interests that [caters] to every individual preferences."
According to Hitesh, El Nido remains especially popular among tourists from Europe and other Western countries, many of whom visit during their winter season—typically from November to the early months of the year—in search of warmer tropical weather.
Despite the steady rise in visitor arrivals, Lime Resort El Nido remains committed to delivering the same level of hospitality to every guest while maintaining the modern comforts and personalized service that define the Lime experience.
He said: "For us, there is no difference between local... all our guests and all are of our VIP guests. So we do not differentiate onto local or expats.
"We want to ensure that even the local people who have not experienced El Nido are provided or extended with the same service standards that the people from, abroad or international tourists when they come here."
Hitesh believes that experiencing Filipino hospitality is one of the highlights of visiting the country.
He added: "For international tourists, it's a privilege for them to experience our hospitality. It's a privilege for them to understand our culture.
"It's a privilege for them to know how Filipinos extend their way of working, their way of their life, lifestyles, as well as, to understand in flesh... that what they heard abroad about how Filipinos treat their visitors, they experience it in flesh."
THE LIME LIFE IN EL NIDO
The Lime Life goes beyond stylish accommodations, modern amenities, and comfort—it’s rooted in genuine Filipino hospitality.
"First of all, it's basically the customer service. As you know, the Filipinos are well-known for its hospitality.
"And, even if you're talking about the international brands, when you go globally, you might find a lot of crowd that caters to all these properties are Filipinos.
"Filipinos are well-known for hospitality. And, any local organization or a local chains that really invests in maximizing the output or the strength of this hospitality talents that we have would really cater to the result.
"Just for an example, Lime Hotel started with a very small property in Boracay with just 46 rooms. Right now, we have five properties already, within 15 years. So yes, that's a result, that we could talk about."
According to Hitesh, the growth of the Lime brand over the years reflects the company's commitment to putting people and service at the center of the guest experience.
He continued: "When we talk about hospitality, you know, everyone can sell accommodation, everyone can sell food and beverage.
"What is most important is how you are different from the others. What we are doing at El Nido, even if this is more of a remote place, we are mixing up modernization with comfort.
"We are very much focused on our customer service. We believe people come here to visit because we have the people who serve them.
"So when the guest comes in, they appreciate, they really want to recognize the services that we are exerting all of our effort. What we also try to do is, there is nothing like 'no' in our vocabulary."
Challenges of a Growing Tourism Industry
As tourism continues to expand in El Nido, challenges inevitably come with that growth. One of the biggest concerns facing the hospitality industry today is attracting and retaining skilled workers.
Hitesh explained, "One biggest challenge is talent... We have a repetitive, shortage of talents that we experience.
"However, it keeps on getting refill na, because every year there are so many graduates that come out.
"It's just that there is too much of effort that goes in. People have a right to, you know, better options in their life. Some of them, they feel that, if they go abroad, it's a better life for them.
"Although our, our staff turnover has been very minimal, but still the lack of talent that what we would like to have to bring it up further is on the greater skill, and I think this is a major concern in all the entire hospitality industry within Philippines."
Beyond manpower concerns, Hitesh emphasized that sustainability and responsible tourism have become equally important as visitor numbers continue to increase.
For him, preserving El Nido's natural beauty must be a shared effort among tourism stakeholders, local communities, and travelers themselves.
The hotel general manager said: "One, sustainability. Second thing is, sense of, how would I say, civic sense, you know, for the tourist department...
"Because we also do understand that he more tourism is, the more expansion of tourism happens, you would be expecting clients coming from various diversified, cultures with lots of different backgrounds, with different way of living.
"The major thing is we need to save our environment. And that's where what I mentioned, civic sense would be of utmost importance for us.
"In addition to that probably, they would, it would be more on the educational front, you know.
"Like with tourism, there should also be education of... decent tourism to be introduced wherein people would be obliged to understand that they need to take care of the environment.
"As you know, El Nido is very popular for its island hoppings, for its diving spots, for its, snorkeling, which affects the natural environment.
"So it's like, environmental responsibility is also a very important factor that needs to be educated to all the tourists that we have."
