It was summer of 2016 when Aubrey Miles and Troy Montero started their backpacking adventures with Tokyo, Japan as their first stop.
So far, they have been to three countries.
After Tokyo, their next destination was Bali, Indonesia.
Early this year, they went to Cambodia, and toured the Siem Reap temples.
Their next stop: “Great Wall of China.”
Have they started planning?
At the launch of Nike Training Camp, Aubrey told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal), “There’s no planning involved.
“Of course you have a list of what you want to do para kahit papa'no, alam mo saan sila, pero other than that, yung mga where to stay, ganyan, that’s part of the adventure.”
The couple have tried staying in a capsule hotel, which charges PHP1,400 per night.
On Instagram, Troy exclaimed, "not bad."
They have slept on bunk beds, too.
But Aubrey said she and Troy do not compromise the quality.
“You can budget, pero maganda pa rin para ma-enjoy.
“May mga requirements kami. Dapat malinis, okay ang banyo, may heater. Kung may mabilis na WiFi, better.
“We stay in a nice hostel , pero not hotel.”
When they went to Japan, space did not become a major consideration because they were usually out anyway.
“Yun yung reason kung bakit praktikal yung choice namin. Kasi hindi ka naman talaga mag-i-stay dun, e.
“Yung gamit lang namin is yung backpack.”
But they don’t scrimp on food.
“Again, we do these trips for adventure at yung food kasama dun, so we really spend on fine dining.
“Kumbaga, masarap yung kinakain namin, pero yung backpack, nasa hostel.”
If there’s one thing that needs careful planning, “Yung outfit.”
She quickly added, “But not for vanity reasons, ha.”
Aubrey revealed that in any country, some people tend to look down on backpackers.
In fact, a recent article on DailyMail.uk,they were being referred to as “begpackers.”
The actress said, “Kasi yun ang misconception sa mga backpackers. Yung budget na walang pera, di ba.
“There’s really discrimination.
“Kasi minsan pag nag-backpack ka, nadi-discrimate yung tao, feeling nila, wala kang pera ganito.
“Ako, naramdaman ko ilang beses, that’s why sabi ko ganito, ‘You have to dress up like this, you look clean.’”
The last day is reserved for shopping.
“It’s usually before flight namin para hindi mabigat.”
Aside from the adventures, Aubrey and Troy have been discovering a lot about each other because of their travels.
“Magugulat ka, ang dami. I mean, we’ve been together how many years pero yung mga situations kasi, minsan dun mo makikita, e.
“That’s why every backpack namin, we discover each other, sino yung mas ganito, mas considerate sa tao.
“Si Troy ang na-discover ko, it’s not that he doesn’t care, pero siya yung mapasensiya. Siya yung, ‘It’s okay. They don’t know you.’
“Sa akin yung patience ko, humaba. Kasi ako yung impatient, e.”
Lastly, what’s the most important advice she can give to those who are planning a backpacking trip?
“Pack light. Pack well,” Aubrey ended.
