FPJ and Erap among first ANI Awards honorees

The late King of Philippine Movies Fernando Poe Jr. (left) and former President Joseph Estrada are shown campaigning in Sta. Maria, Bulacan, during the 1998 presidential election. The two head the list of movie greats to be honored at the first ANI Awards on February 23.

The Movie Workers Welfare Foundation (Mowelfund) will pay tribute to Filipino movie greats with a grand show this February 23 at the Aliw Theater of the Cultural Center Complex.

To increase awareness about Mowelfund and to raise funds for the institute, gaganapin ang unang ANI Awards—the Mowelfund Tribute to Filipino Movie Greats. Under the direction of Nick Deocampo, paparangalan ng ANI hindi lang ang stars of yesteryears, kundi ang mga artista rin sa kasalukuyan. Ang common denominator nila, sabi ng Mowelfund, ay they have made "a tremendous contribution to the Filipino movie industry."

Sina Nanette Inventor at Leo Martinez ang maghu-host ng show. Confirmed presenters and participants sina Lipa Mayor Vilma Santos, Senator Bong Revilla, Sunshine Cruz, Cesar Montano, Jericho Rosales, Heart Evangelista, Phillip Salvador, Jolina Magdangal, Toni Gonzaga, among others.

To be honored with grand production numbers by today's top stars are National Artist Don Jose Nepomuceno, the director of the first Filipino silent film and also considered the Father of Philippine Movies; National Artist Atang de la Rama, the queen of the zarzuela and kundiman; legendary screen love team Rogelio de la Rosa and Carmen Rosales; and Rosa del Rosario, the very first Darna of Philippine cinema.

Magbibigay-pugay rin ang Mowelfund sa immortal memory of the King of Philippine Movies at National Artist for Film na si Fernando Poe Jr., the unforgettable comedy tandem of Dolphy and Panchito, and former President Joseph "Erap" Estrada, who is the first FAMAS Hall of Fame recipient for Best Actor and one of the pillars of Mowelfund.

Si Erap ang nagbuo ng Mowelfund at siya ang naging unang presidente nito. The rationale for Mowelfund's existence is to ensure that marginalized movie workers may enjoy social security despite tough times in the business.

The current leadership of Mowelfund now mounts this fundraiser and tribute to affirm the invaluable contributions of various art forms—from literature to music to theater and even to fashion design—in the crucial beginnings of local cinema in the country.

Magkakaroon din ng exhibit of this first group of ANI awardees sa Aliw Theater Lobby from February 17 to 23. Liban dito, may movie showing ding mangyayari from February 17 to 20.
