Movie director Joey Gosiengfiao dies

Former movie director Joey Gosiengfiao—who directed the launching movies of Maricel Soriano, Dina Bonnevie, Snooky Serna, and other regal Babies—died at 3:50 AM from a heart attack.

This is not his first heart attack. Sa katunayan, he was already using a pacemaker before his death.

Kagabi ay nakatanggap na ang PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) ng reports mula sa kaibigan at companion ni Direk Joey na si Jun Maccarubo. Ayon kay Jun, the doctors were able to revive the director when he was brought to the hospital, pero considered brain- or clinically dead na raw si Joey, gabi of the same day, and dependent na lang siya sa isang respirator.

After a few hours, hindi na nakayanan ng batikang direktor at tuluyan na siyang namaalam.

Long associated with Regal Films, Joey was one of the foremost directors of the ‘70s and the ‘80s.

One of the three directors of the best Vilma Santos Darna movie, ang Lipad, Darna, Lipad—together with Emmanuel Borlaza and Elwood Perez—mas nakilala si Joey kasabay ng unang batch of Regal Babies na sina Dina Bonnevie, Maricel Soriano, and Snooky Serna noong ‘80s.

Si Joey ang direktor ng mga launching movies nina Dina (Katorse, 1980) and Snooky (Bata Pa Si Sabel, 1981), and the cult classic Underage (1980) with Dina, Snooky, and Maricel.

Isa pang underrated classic recently transformed into a stage play is his Temptation Island (1981), starring Dina, Jennifer Cortez, Bambi Arambulo, Azenith Briones, and Deborah Sun.

Some of his memorable movies in the ‘80s were Nympha (1980) ni Alma Moreno, Blue Jeans (1981) nina Dina and Alfie Anido, at Bakit Ba Ganyan? (1981) na unang pagsasama nina Dina at Vic Sotto.

Kay Joey rin ang pelikula ng second batch of Regal Babies na 14 Going Steady (1984), which included Janice de Belen, Gretchen Barretto, and Nadia Montenegro.

In the ‘70s, when he was just starting, Joey also directed an action movie, ang Sunugin ang Samar starring Ramon Revilla and Aurora Pijuan in 1974; the fantasy comic material Kambal Sa Uma starring Rio Locsin in 1976; and a sexy comedy of manners, Ang Boyfriend Kong Baduy, starring Orestes Ojeda, also in 1976.

In the '90s to the present, nanatili na lamang si Joey sa background serving as producer, mostly for Regal Films, like Bala at Lipstick ni Roderick Paulate (1994, as supervising producer); Serafin Geronimo: Kriminal ng Baryo Concecpion ni Raymond Bagasting (1998, as producer); Sana Pag-Ibig Na, na unang directorial job ni Jeffrey Jeturian (1998, as supervising producer); at Pila Balde ni Anna Capri (1999, as supervising producer).

Direk Joey's last two directorial jobs were The Rape of Virginia P ni Alma Moreno noong 1989 and The Nights of Serafina in 1996.

Joey was credited for discovering, among others, Al Tantay, now a television director.

March 15 ang kaarawan ni Joey, the day he was rushed to the hospital.

May necrological service para kay Direk Joey sa Mount Carmel Church in Quezon City mamayang gabi, March 16.
