Jon Avila: From fat to hunk

Star Magic Batch 15 member and Bench model Jon Avila used to be a shy chubby boy, so he focused on working out to prove himself.

One of the steadiest new male stars of ABS-CBN's Star Magic Batch 15, si Jon Avila rin ang pinaka-impressive in looks and in height. Born Jonathan Mullaly in Stratford, East London, Jon is half-Filipino and half-Irish. He stands 6' 3" and has green eyes that contrast sharply with his black hair. He took up Business sa Chelmsford College.

Modeling ang inuwi ni Jon sa Pilipinas, a fly-in (term for models outside of the country na dinadala sa Pilipinas for purposes of competition and modeling jobs). He is not shy to flaunt his body dahil may reason siya for doing so.

Growing up, Jon was a chubby and stocky kid.

"My weight was an insecurity for me. The fact that I'm the only Asian around our area also added to that insecurity," pahayag niya during the press con of the Star Magic Batch 15 last Tuesday sa ABS-CBN.

Jon pushed himself to strenously work out until he reached his desired weight and body. More than 40 pounds ang nabawas sa original niyang timbang. May isang personal na naitanong kami sa kanya, about the stretchmarks left by excessive fat kapag pumapayat. Meron din daw siya noon sa likod niya.

Hindi niya raw ito ipapaalis kahit may mga paraan na ngayon to take it off. Reminder niya raw ito how fat he was then.

Accepting the modeling job wherein he has to bare down to his briefs—for the Bench campaign and the Icon Magazine pictorial—is actually a flattering idea for him.

"This is my way of proving myself, a self-achievement of what I can achieve if I focus myself," sabi niya.

Having said that, that's the most daring he could do na raw dahil he doesn't think he can do bare pictorial or showing more flesh. His half-Irish and half-Filipino blood make Jon a very strict Catholic.

Bigla rin naming naala-ala na halos magkahawig sila ng kuwento ni Sam Milby.

Sam is a half-American who grew up in a community where he was the only Filipino student in his school. He was a chubby boy na nagpapayat din and he first moved to the country to do commercials.

Jon said he would be very flattered if he were compared with Sam Milby.

"Sam is one of my idols. Successful, hard working, the kind of matinee idol I wish I could be," sabi niya.
