Rodrigo Duterte on 'rape joke': "I said it in the heat of my anger... it was not a joke."

That is an incident but there is a story behind it," says Rodrigo Duterte on his remark about an Australian missionary who was raped and killed in Davao in 1989.</p>

“Gutter language 'yan, e, salitang kanto,”

“Noong binuksan ko [yung body bag], galit akong nagsasalita, 'Ang ganda-ganda pa, parang galing Amerika, p***** i** naunahan pa ako. Patayin mo lahat.'

“Sa galit 'yon, I was not joking.”

Sabi ng presidential candidate ng PDP-Laban, “You have the footages, I'm sure lahat kayo, the major networks at that time.

Patuloy na sabi ni Duterte, “I'm sorry if it came out of this late.

“That is my explanation. If you do not believe it, there's the network, you can show it.

“Ngayon, gutter language.

“That is an incident, but there is a story behind it.

“'Yang pagsabi ko ng 'O, ito naunahan pa ang mayor,' that is a bad incident, it was a bad remark, it was a bad joke.

“Ganun talaga ang mga lalaki, that's a cliché.

“Ganun talaga, yung mga gago ganun magsalita.”

READY TO LOSE.

“I will not [say sorry].

“As a matter of fact, I am even willing to lose the presidency.

“Do not make me apologize for something which I did, na talagang it was called for by the moment.

“I can lose the Gabriela and all, wala akong pakialam.

“Sabi ko sa inyo, I do not die if I do not become a president.

“But certainly, as a matter of honor, I will stick to my guns.”

Giit pa niya, “I said it in the heat of my anger.

“No, it was not a joke.

“I said it in the narrative. I was not smiling.

“I'm sorry to the Filipino people. It's my style, it's my mouth.

“I said it in the heat of my anger. But listen to the story behind.

I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul.”

Aniya, “If it brings me down, then let it bring me down.

If it brings me up to the president, then, well and good. I will serve you.

But I will not, as a matter of honor, apologize for something.... as a matter of principle.

I will apologize to the Filipino people because, in the first place, every crime that is committed against a hapless citizen is always a responsibility of the government.

If the incident turned out to bloody and gory, sorry.

Pero kung sabihin mo yung bunganga ko, as a matter of principle, I will not [apologize].

I will not for the life of me.

I can lose the election today.

ACTIONS OVER WORDS.

No apologies to any particular entity or person.

“To the Filipinos, yes, because that is what happened.”

Maniwala kayo? You have the records, TV and all.

Ako dito, nagpapa-hostage, nagtatrabaho at the expense of my [life]. Sinusugal ko ang buhay ko dito.

Kayo diyan nakaw nang nakaw, wala namang ginagawa.”
