It’s hard to believe that Paolo Contis has been in show business for two decades. It seems like only yesterday that he was just the cute kid from the show Ang TV, which launched the careers of many in his generation. Paolo is aware of this, and has made a lot of effort to distance himself from his former cutesy image.
“Nagpaganda ako ng katawan para malaman nila na hindi na ako si Ang TV boy,” he tells Men’s Health magazine as he takes time to grace its February cover. Indeed, the cute, baby-faced boy has been replaced by one of the best villains that local television has seen.
Also hailed by Cosmopolitan magazine as one of the sexiest celebrities in 2008, Paolo shares that while getting fit was not an easy task, pursuing a goal made it easier. “Nakita ko ang tingin sa akin ng tao na mas mature so mas naging madali para sa akin. If you have a goal, hindi ka magsasawa,” he tells Men’s Health. “Ang sarap ng buong araw mo pag naka-workout ka sa umaga.” Working out has been more than just a fitness regimen for Paolo; it has clearly become a way of life.
His work ethic is no less intense. “Ako kasi I just do my assignment very well,” he says, “I’m being paid to do my best, so I do my best. If I don’t, baka mawala ako. So if I’m the kontrabida, I could be the worst asshole that you could meet.”
In his real-life career, however, Paolo, sees pakikisama as valuable in local showbiz. He stresses that it’s important to be kind to everyone you work with, especially since people rise from the ranks. “Ang production assistant dati, producer ko na ngayon. So kung masama ang ugali ko dati, hindi nila ako kukunin ngayon....wala silang masasabing masama sa akin. I do my job well. I come on time. Walang reklamong maririnig from me. I’m fun to work with. Staying power mo yung pakikisama mo sa lahat.”
Success in showbiz for two decades is no mean feat. Read more about Paolo’s formula for his staying power in the February issue of Men’s Health magazine, which is available in news stands, bookstores, and supermarkets nationwide.
