Celebrity surgeon Dr. Manny Calayan wanted only an intimate gathering with his friends in media, but he was surprised to see a bigger party when he arrived at Hard Rock Café, Makati City last night, August 19.
"Sabi ko, ayaw ko ng bongga, hindi ako sanay sa ganun. Gusto ko 'yong intimate lang, 'yong press lang. Pagpasok ko dito, nagulat ako! Pagkakita ko, nandito na ang endorsers ko," Dr. Calayan happily related to PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other members of the press.
The birthday celebrator was greeted by the Calayan endorsers Sunshine Dizon, Jed Madela, Snooky Serna, Angelica Jones, Faith Cuneta, Coverboys member Rafael Rosell, Trip na Trip hosts Kat de Castro and Uma Khouny, and Pinoy Pop Superstar alumni Jonaylyn Viray and Brenan Espartinez.
Singer Selina Sevilla was also at the event carrying a pillow. It was only four days after she was operated on by Dr. Manny and his team for her botched butt job. She is the first benefactor of the newly-formed Calayan Surgicenter Foundation. (Click here to read related article.)
"Ang major [na ginawa], inalis natin 'yong in-inject sa kanya. 'Tapos nag-alis tayo ng ibang tissue na talagang hindi na mase-save. Tiningnan namin within para hindi na masira talaga, maiwasan 'yong pagkalubog. Until now, fourth day niya, post-[operation]..." narrated Dr. Manny.
The birthday celebrator wishes to help more people who need reconstructive surgery, like Selina. He said, "Kasi, alam mo, marami sa atin ang nangangailangan na mga wala namang pera, mga indigent, at saka 'yong may mga inborn defects, aayusin natin 'yan for free."
Dr. Manny and wife Dra. Pie Calayan decided to put up a surgicenter in Beverly Hills in California, which is slated to open next month. Dr. Manny said that it's their way of branching out.
"Mauuna ang Los Angeles and next is San Francisco. 'Tapos going east tayo, mamaya Middle East na 'yan. One at a time."
Aside from their goal to be known globally, Dr. Manny said that their clinic in California was built because his two daughters, Hannah and Bernice, will soon be studying medicine in the U.S. With their clinic in the States, he and Dra. Pie will have more reason to frequently visit their daughters.
"Malungkot nga, e, kasi medisina rin ang kukunin nila, magdo-doktor din. So, I'm counting mga 12 to 15 years. Kaya nga nag-open up din kami ng clinic para habang binibisita sila, trabaho pa rin," said Dr. Manny.
How about putting up clinics around Asia?
It seems like it's not the priority of Calayan Surgicenter. "Kasi malapit naman sila," Dr. Manny commented.
He further explained his planned clinics in the States. "Marami tayong kababayan kasi sa U.S. na, 'yon nga, very happy sila. Sa Facebook, 'yong mga comments nila, 'Salamat, you're branching out. You're reaching out,' parang ganun. At saka makakatipid din sila ng airfare. 'Yong mga hindi talaga makauwi, 'yon ang ating ike-cater."
"WALANG SINUSULOT." Dr. Calayan was also asked for his reaction about Calayan Surgicenter's newest endorser Pops Fernandez. It was reported that there might be a conflict on having the ex-wife of Martin Nievera as an endorser since she's already with Philosophy by Mikaela.
Although Pops already cleared this issue in a previous interview, Dr. Calayan reiterated that he does not have a problem with anyone.(Click here to read related article.)
The Concert Queen explained before that she was endorsing the slimming procedure offered by Mikaela; with Calayan Surgicenter, she would be promoting its skin procedures.
When pressed for further comment, Dr. Manny simply said: "Wala akong sinusulot. Wala akong kinukumpitensya."
In closing, he said, "Sana marami pang [Calayan SurgiCenter] branches na ma-put up at sana marami pang matulungan ang [Calayan] foundation."
