Gwyneth Paltrow got drunk "all the time" when filming Country Strong.
The 38-year-old actress, who used to adhere to a strict macrobiotic diet, claims it was "awesome" getting into character to portray an alcoholic singer in the movie, though she admits her approach wasn't very professional.
She quipped: "You just get really drunk all the time. Which is awesome! At least I did anyway, it's not very professional. There's a Bloody Mary at 10 am and keep it going all day!
"It was actually very liberating and amazing to play somebody who just didn't think about consequences because I'm so responsible with my life, and too worried about everybody and my kids and where's everybody going."
The Hollywood actress plays down-on-her-luck country singer Kelly Canter—who is struggling with drink problems while trying to make a comeback in the film—and according to the film's writer and director Shana Feste, the character was based on modern stars who have struggled with their fame.
She told Billboard.com: "I wanted to present these characters as messy, complicated and conflicted.
"Everybody is flawed. We build these artists and celebrate them, then at the first sign of weakness, we rally around their downfall.
"Then we want to build them back up for a comeback. How difficult to live life like that in public."
Shana added she took inspiration from Britney Spears, who had a public breakdown in 2008, and Michael Jackson, the King of Pop who was attempting to stage possibly the biggest comeback of all time, with 50 sold out live stadium dates, when he tragically died in 2009 due to acute intoxication with powerful anaesthetic Propofol.
Gwyneth—who has two children, Apple, six, and four-year-old Moses, with her 33-year-old husband Chris Martin—has starred opposite a string of hunky actors in her movies, including Jude Law and former fiancé Brad Pitt, but says Tom Cruise was her favorite co-star.
She told TV talk show host Rachael Ray: "I did a little cameo at the beginning of Austin Powers 3, I think it was, and I got to make out with Tom Cruise. He was an amazing kisser!"
