One of her father’s most ardent supporters, Atty. Sara Duterte-Carpio was at the forefront when the people clamored for Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to run for President.
She even shaved her head to convince her father to agree.
Of course, everyone knows how it all turned out as we now await the final proclamation of Duterte’s win as president.
Does this mean the younger Duterte will be the next "First Lady"?
In the GMA documentary election special Wanted President, Duterte revealed that his daughter volunteered to take the title.
He said, “Early on, it was Inday [Sara] who volunteered that she wants to be the First Lady since she is the top honcho sa pamilya namin.
“She’s the Alpha of the family.”
But as game day drew nearer, Sara seemed to have changed her mind and preferred to stay in Davao as its mayor.
In an interview with Philippine Star, Sara explained her decision.
“If I win as mayor of Davao, I want to focus on my job. Gusto ko nakatutok sa trabaho. My family is there. The biggest challenge of being a politician is motherhood. Time management.”
She has two kids: adopted daughter Sharky, 7, and son Stingray, 3, with her husband Mans Carpio.
POLITICS IN THE FAMILY. Sara started out reluctant to pursue politics, which had been a heated topic between her and her father.
The eldest daughter of Duterte did become a lawyer as her dad wanted, but she initially pursued that path of becoming a doctor despite the disapproval of her dad.
But circumstances led Sara to San Beda Law School after a year in medical school.
Eventually, the younger Duterte was asked to run for the city's vice-mayor.
Initially, she declined, but was eventually convinced in 2007.
That period in her life affirmed her notion that being a mother and a politician had its strains.
Sara recalled in an interview with ABS-CBN News, “Si Sharky ang pinakakawawa nung 2007.
“Parang nangyari sa akin parang sa tatay ko. Tulog pa si [Sharky], aalis na ako. Pag-uwi ko ng gabi, tulog na siya. Parang ganun yung feeling ko. Pero at least sa akin, okay lang, first years kasi. Limited lang ang maaalala niya.
"So bumawi ako nung…sabi ko, 'Mali. Mali na itong ginagawa ko.'
"Bumawi na ako.”
But in 2010, Sara became the first woman and the youngest to be elected as mayor. She served until 2013.
In GMA’s 24 Oras special news series Kabiyak, Sara underlined that growing up with her father molded her into the woman that is she today.
“Nakita ko yung trabaho niya from nine year old hanggang ngayon. Mabilis na ako mag-decide, kung merong isyu, may problema, kasi kinalakihan ko na, e. Parang second nature ko na.”
THE LADIES OF DUTERTE. In the same interview with GMA on Wanted President, Duterte clarified that he does see himself as a single man, but acknowledges the current lady of his life, his common-law wife Honeylet Avancena.
They have a 12-year-old daughter Veronica, nicknamed Kitty.

Honeylet is willing to live in Malacanang with Duterte, but would prefer to live a quiet life away from the public eye.
She has been with Duterte for 20 years.
She worked as a registered nurse in the U.S., where she gave birth to their daughter.
Meanwhile, Durterte’s ex-wife Elizabeth “Beth” Zimmerman has remained a part of his life as well.
Beth is currently battling Stage 3 breast cancer, but still took part in her ex-husband’s presidential campaign.
Good vibes sa inyo lahat mula kay Elizabeth at Digong! Hayaan daw mamayagpag ang black propaganda para lalong sumikat ang love team nila. Pinaguusapan ang a second chance dito yiiiiiihi #asecondchance #marrymeagain #du30 #Duterte2016 #justDuit #goodvibes #dancedancedance #DigongBeth2016 hahahahaha #hatersgonnahate #pildiangmasuya
The politician and the former flight stewardess were married for 27 years, before Beth filed for an annulment in 1998.
Her ground for annulment was emotional abuse.
They had three kids together: Paulo, the current Davao vice-mayor, Sara, and Sebastian. All of them are married with children.
Despite their annulment, Beth and Duterte consider themselves friends.
He even liked the idea of having Beth in Malacanang, along with him and Honeylet.
