Eula Valdes enters Walang Hanggan as a dark character with a mission

Eula Valdes agrees that Walang Hanggan lead actor Coco Martin is “yummy.” Prior to joining the roster of talents—Dawn Zulueta, Susan Roces, Helen Gamboa, Richard Gutierrez, Julia Montes, Paolo Avelino—in the primetime hit, Eula had already worked with Coco in Born To Love You. She praises the young actor, “Sabihin na lang natin na guwapo siya at magaling siyang artista! Masaya ako na makakatrabah

Eula Valdes was formally introduced to the press as an incoming recruit in the primetime Kapamilya soap, Walang Hanggan.

At the press conference held yesterday, July 5, at the Patio Carlito Restaurant along Mother Ignacia Street, Quezon City, the actress initially expressed how happy and blessed she is that she gets to join the powerhouse talents of the soap—which consist of Coco Martin, Julia Montes, Richard Gomez, Dawn Zulueta, Paulo Avelino, Helen Gamboa, and Susan Roces.

“Napakasuwerte ko na kinuha nila ako para mapasama dito sa Walang Hanggan dahil napakataas nga ng ratings, napakaraming sumusubaybay sa teleseryeng ito,” said Eula, who came in a regal black ensemble for an outfit, accented by silver jewelry, and red kitty heels.

She hesitated to share too much about her mysterious character, Black Lily, who the teaser reveals as a villain out to seek revenge on Daniel Guidoti and his family.

Eula, who was also a cast member in the recently concluded afternoon soap Mundo Man ay Magunaw, told the press that there is pressure on her part to take on Black Lily’s character.

“Ang masasabi ko lang kasi, maraming nag-e-expect. Lalo na nung medyo lumabas itong Black Lady nga. Ang ine-expect nila is another Amor Powers.”

No, her character is not another Amor Powers—a role in the 2000 teleserye hit Pangako Sa ‘Yo that relaunched her as an actress. For starters, Amor’s cookie-cutter rags to riches story was already embossed in the Walang Hanggan plot through Emily Guidoti (Dawn Zulueta).

DIFFICULTIES. Eula, a stunner at 43, admits that Black Lily’s character comes as a challenge.

Her first shooting day got the seasoned actress jittery.

“Kahapon nga yung first day ko and sobrang ano ako... yung kinakabahan?

Because she came in at this time when the story is hitting its climax, Eula has to keep up.

At kinakabahan ako.

“Although lagi naman akong kinakabahan kapag first day ng taping.

GAME PLAN. Eula has worked with the equally youthful Dawn in the remake of the teleserye classic, Mula sa Puso.

She adds that it is her first time to work with Helen Gamboa, meanwhile Susan Roces she has worked with in the 1988 film Buy One, Take One.

She recalls, “Ano pa ako nun, chubby-chubby pa ako! Although wala kaming eksena masyado dahil more on kay Sharon [Cuneta] ako kontrabida nung time na yun.”

For her to perform well, Eula knows she needs the guidance of directors Jerry Sineneng and Trina Dayrit.

COCO MARTIN. Eula looks up to Coco Martin as a talented young actor. She in fact got to work with Coco in the Star Cinema romantic-comedy Born To Love You early this year. Eula played the character of Coco’s mother hence on the set the actor still calls her “Mommy.”

At the press conference proper, Eula was teased about her character, Black Lily, ending up in a love triangle with Daniel (Coco) and Katerina (Julia Montes).

She reacts: “Kanina naisip ko rin ’yan… May-December love affairs…”

Hurled the question, “Do you find Coco, yummy?”

Eula laughs, meekly agrees, and disclaims, “Ano lang ’yan, yummy na ano, a... PG. Parental Guidance!

STEPPING UP TO AMOR POWERS. The inevitable was asked at the press conference. Will Black Lily’s role step up or be at par with the Amor Powers character that until today is associated with Eula?

Yun kasi, kumbaga, yung buong puso ko, nilagay ko dun, e, nung ginawa ko yun.”

Eula recounts how meticulous she was in studying and taking on the role.

“Kadalasan, may mga eksena kunwari kami ni Tonton [Gutierrez], na parang sasabihin ko, ‘I hate you, I hate you!’

As she is at the moment adjusting in the new projects, Eula is uncertain whether Black Lily will be as celebrated a character as Amor Powers.

She is bent on paying attention to every detail of her role.
