TV5 news head Luchi Cruz-Valdez on News5 being compared with other news organizations: “I think we’re already at their level. And, you know, we’re gonna get stronger.”

Sabi ng TV5 news head na si Luchi Cruz-Valdez: "We’re really able to deliver, not just news and information, but also really public service.”

“To be number 1!” natatawa pero seryosong sagot ni Luchi.

“The long-term plan, which we’ve already started, we really wanna give meaning to “Higit sa balita, Aksyon.”

“I really, really believe that we’re the only news organization that’s truly geared towards public service.

“News5 is the only news organization that has within its... it’s systemic. The public service unit is part of the system.

"And so we have the News5 AKSYON [Center], we also have the Alagang Kapatid Foundation, which I manage.

“And because we have these resources and all of this support from the network and even from the MVP Group of Companies...

“We’re really able to deliver, not just news and information, but also really public service.”

Tugon niya, “News5 became a venue for the CSR [corporate social responsibility] of the MVP Group of Companies.

“They’ve been wanting to give their share, to give back to community for the longest time, and they found it in News5, knowing that News5 has Rescue 5.

“Alam mo, pinuri ito ni MVP kahapon [August 8] in the foundation meeting. Sobra siyang special mention.

“They’re now able to give back through Rescue 5, through Alagang Kapatid Foundation, and the News5 AKSYON Center [for immediate response].

“Parang feeling ko, it’s a major differentiator, and in many ways, it also sets us apart from other news organizations, in that it gives news another image.

“With us, news is not just delivery of bad news, it’s really more than anything else—it’s delivery of action, solution to the bad news.

“We’re not just harping and calling other people’s attention, we’re doing what we can also... it’s really proactive news.

“So while we stay committed to the tenets of journalism, which is fair, accurate, balanced reporting, we do more than just deliver the news.

“We really act on the issues wherever they can be acted on.”

Sabi nito, “Well, right now, I think what really works for us is we’re a very young but very eager news organization.

“You know, there’s young but untrained and unskilled, but we are young and fast-learning.

“And in our two and a half years, I think we can safely say that we’ve caught up.

“Our ratings reflect naman that. AKSYON’s ratings in particular already reflect that… we’re fast-moving.

“Our anchors are all field workers as well. They’re not just readers.

“And then at the same time we have a very, very healthy fair share of veteran reporters…

“We have Twink Macaraig, Roby Alampay, DJ Sta. Ana, Patrick Paez, Danton Remoto—journalists all, but most of them work behind the cameras.

“Yun ang mga haligi dito, e. Parang ang feeling ko, veteran reporter for veteran reporter, di kami nahuhuli, ah.”

“Very, very good mix,” pagmamalaki pa niya.

HABAGAT COVERAGE.

“You know, I was surprised myself to see that we’ve come a long way and I was so happy to see our young reporters.

“After just two years on-air, some of them less, nakikipag-sabayan na sila.

“I can safely really say that they’re already neck-and-neck with their counterparts in the other two networks.

“And even our crews, let’s not forget. I mean you can’t even tell the difference anymore [in terms of videography]. I don’t think you can tell the difference.

“It’s not to say we’re picture-perfect all the time or projection-ready all the time, but even GMA and ABS naman, e, they have moments.

“We have our share of hits and misses, kumbaga. But I don’t think we’re far behind.

“I really don’t. In fact I think we’re already at their level. And you know, we’re gonna get stronger.

“We can only get stronger because we’re so very young. Ito ang advantage namin, e.

“Parang you need young reporters. They’re already trained. They have nowhere to go but up.

“They can only become better and stronger.

"Others, you know, they may already be strong even before we came in. But here’s the disadvantage: we are also human, we get tired.

“They age—they have families, stuff to take care of. Our reporters are young, they’re single.

“They’re just about to peak. Others have already come.

“Parang kami, feeling ko, we’re the sunrise news organization. We’re the news org to watch.

"They talk about sunrise industries, di ba? I think, in terms of TV news organization, I think we’re the sunrise news org.

“We have not yet peaked, but we’re already pretty much where the others are and they have peaked.

“And pretty soon we’re gonna have our own English news channel.

“We’re putting together an English news channel… We just don’t have a name for it yet.

“And that’s going to be our sixth platform. This is how committed the company is to this news organization.”

BROADCAST JOURNALIST.

Sabi ng broadcast journalist na minsan nang nagtrabaho sa PROBE, GMA, at ABS-CBN: “The thing about being a veteran reporter for thirty years, I think I can probably take pride in having been the first to do many of the issues that are now being brought up by the younger reporters.

“And now, I’m so glad to see that there are so many, and in fact, most TV journalists dream of becoming an investigative reporter.

“I’d like to think that was what I contributed... that I inspired many of these reporters to go the rough way. Because, more than ever, we need in-depth perspective.

“We can’t go by the shallow conclusion.”

“They have to look at journalism as a calling more than just a profession.

“Because if they’re going to rely on journalism as their source of bread and butter, they’re not gonna last.

“Because part of being a journalist is really just do what it takes to be able to deliver a story that will inform.

“And the information that you need to know is something that will have a bearing on the decision-making capacity of your viewers.

“Having said that, I have to say that I really appreciate News5 for making it worth the journalist’s while.”

Dagdag puri nito sa management ng istasyon niya, “They give great support to our journalists, to all of us in News5.

“They allow us to answer our calling, but at the same time, not have to worry about our bread and butter."

NEW ENGLISH NEWS CHANNEL.

Pagmamalaki nga ni Luchi, “So we have now—Radyo Singko, InterAksyon, Aksyon TV, WIN and TV5—five platforms.”

“And pretty soon we’re gonna have our own English news channel," pag-a-anunsiyo ni Luchi.

“We’re putting together an English news channel. We just don’t have a name for it yet.

“And that’s going to be our sixth platform. This is how committed the company is to this news organization."

Sagot nito, “Cignal muna ’yan. And, siyempre, Pilipinas Global.

Ang Pilipinas Global Network ay exclusive distributor ng TV5 programs and contents sa labas ng Pilipinas via Kapatid TV5 and Aksyon TV International.

Meron na ba itong channel assignment?

“Wala pa, wala pa. But we’re already crafting... I mean we have a TO [table of organization] already, we have a program grid already.

“It should be up and running by first quarter of 2013—that’s the target.”

“Pero ano pa lang, ha? Save-in, kasi yung full operations will begin when we move to Reliance."

Magha-hire ba sila ng additional people exclusive to this channel?

“Definitely, oo. But not just exclusive, we’ll also tap into the resources of existing News5.

Dagdag ni Luchi, “That’s something to look forward to. Abangan nila yun.”
