PEP EXCLUSIVE Aljur Abrenica on "rivalry" with brother Vin Abrenica: “Wala namang kumpetisyon sa aming dalawa. Nagmamahalan kami.”

GMA-7’s “Ultimate Hunk” Aljur Abrenica (left) swears protecting his brother Vin (right), Artista Academy’s male grand winner, from (at times) unkind side of showbiz.

Aljur Abrenica has two decent projects going for him at the moment— the Kapuso network’s remake of the smash hit Korean drama series Coffee Prince and the 2012 Metro Manila Film Festival entry Sossy Problems.

The former, a GMA-7 primetime teleserye, will end in two weeks’ time.

The soap, where Aljur plays the debonair leading man of Kris Bernal’s popular androgynous character, was really meant to be aired for only seven weeks.

PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) caught up with the hunky actor last night, November 13, at the Eastwood City grounds in Quezon City where Sossy Problems was shooting the whole day.

Fresh off filming a scene, Aljur was eager for a chat.

COFFEE PRINCE. He initially talked about his short stint in Coffee Prince, a project that reunited him with his counterpart StarStruck victor, Kris.

“Unang-una, sobrang thankful ako. Kasi after one year—more than a year— saka ako ulit nagkaro’n ng lead na role.

“Tapos balik-tambalan pa namin ni Kris.

“And siyempre, kinabahan kami before that. Tatanggapin pa ba kami?

“Tinanggap [naman] kami ng tao.

"Tapos, nagpapasalamat ako sa ratings, nagugulat ako.

"Tinanggap kami at talagang sinusubaybayan kami,” said a pleased Aljur.

He justified the brief airing time that Coffee Prince was given.

Aljur was referring to Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), which owns the rights of the original South Korean series.

The project, nonetheless, made him and his leading lady realize something.

Best friends talaga.”

While the actor has been paired with the hottest Kapuso actresses as Heart Evanglista, Rhian Ramos, and Bianca King—all of whom he gets to work with in Sossy Problems—Aljur believes that his loveteam with Kris still brings out the best in him.

“Kasi may story kami, e.

SOSSY PROBLEMS. As Coffee Prince ends this November 23, Aljur is bent on giving his best in Sossy Problems where he makes his first Metro Manila Film Festival appearance.

Directed by Andoy Ranay, the comedy stars Aljur as Benjo, the good-looking all-around help of a polo club where the “sossy” or rich girls hang out.

Does he think he has a shot at landing a nomination, at least, at the annual film festival?

Aljur laughed at the idea.

“Kung manalo man ako, salamat.

VIN ABRENICA. At the mention of his younger brother’s triumph as Best Actor of TV5’s star reality search Artista Academy, a wide smile appeared across Aljur’s face.

How proud is he of Vin?

It cannot be denied that Vin’s victory significantly proved one thing about their family, Aljur being the ultimate winner of GMA-7’s reality-based artista search, StarStruck, back in 2007.

Swelling with pride, Aljur said, “Kumbaga, wala silang masasabi sa amin…

“So, bilang isang kuya, wala talaga akong masabi. All the way, suporta ako sa kanya…

“Thankful ako kay Lord. Sobrang bilib ako sa kapatid ko!”

BACKSTORY. Aljur was more than willing to recall the time Vin called him up in the States just to convey his decision to give Artista Academy a try.

Aljur narrated how Vin, 21, a Culinary Arts student graduate, was on his way to Batangas to see to their family-owned business when he phoned him.

“’O, sige!’” marked Aljur’s blessing, his being supportive of his sibling’s decision.

“Kasi ako, kung anong gusto nila.

"So, pumila siya for ten hours. Nagkasakit pa siya dun sa Araneta."

He revealed what he is most proud of about his brother during the star-search tilt: “Yung kapatid ko, sobrang hanga ako sa kanya kasi ni minsan, hindi siya humingi ng tulong sa akin.

“So, hindi ako tumulong talaga!

Aljur said, laughing.

Having gone through a similar competition before, Aljur knew he had to be there for Vin.

“Competition yun, e. So, kahit ano, puwedeng mangyari, e.

“E, ayun, thank God lalo, nanalo!”

Reliving his brother’s glorious moment, Aljur said, “Ibang pride talaga ang idinulot sa amin no’n!

“Dalawa na [kami]! History yun! Dalawang network, magkapatid pa nanalo sa competition!”

SIMILARITIES, DIFFERENCES, CLOSENESS. Comparisons have been made between the two Abrenicas since Vin entered the Kapatid channel’s competition.

Aljur brushed it off, “Sa talent kasi, wala. Parehas kami ng dedikasyon, e.

"Wala kaming [pagkakaiba]… singing, dancing, acting, nagagawa niya rin, e.

"Saka magaling talaga siya!”

Asked what he think is his brother’s strength and edge over him, the elder Abrenica replied: “Yung edge niya siguro, mas lalaki siyang tingnan, e!

So who’s more goodlooking then?

Aljur, who sees his brother as “brusko,” chuckled, “It depends, e.

Upon the inquiry “How close are you and Vin?” the actor’s expressive eyes revealed more than what he said.

“Nagse-share kami ng wardrobe, kahit nakakadiri.

"Pero, mahal ko yun, e. Kapatid ko yun, e.

“Tapos sabay pa kaming—nakakatuwa—sabay pa kaming maligo hanggang ngayon! Awkward, di ba?”

Not a tad bit uncomfortable, Aljur shared, “Ako, hindi ako nahihiya sabihin kasi kapatid ko [siya].

“Kunwari, nagkasabay kami, naliligo na ako, ‘Kuya, may call time ako!’

“[Sasabihin ko], ‘Sige, sabay ka na!’

“Ligo kami, wala, walang ano…

"So, ganun talaga kami ka-close ni Vin.”

Aljur and Vin are the older brothers of their 16-year-old sister and their youngest, a 12-year-old boy.

OVERPROTECTIVE. As the eldest one, Aljur has always been keen on his siblings, all the more now that Vin just entered the industry.

Asked exactly what in showbiz he means to keep his brother from, Aljur hesitantly replied, “Wala, siguro sasabihin ko na lang, overprotective ako sa kanya.

He emphasized, “Kumbaga, bilang isang kuya, ayokong pagdaanan niya yung pinagdaanan ko. Gusto ko, diretso lang siya.

“Ayoko siyang masaktan.

Will he agree to his brother engaging in a relationship with a showbiz personality?

Kung kikilalanin n’yo lang si Vin, he’s a very smart guy!”

According to Aljur, Vin has always been the one between them who did well in school.

“Lagi siyang top. Gifted siya. Sobrang talino niya!”

THREAT. Aljur said that he is not the slightest bit threatened that one day his brother will outdo him in the entertainment circuit.

Aljur is certain that at some point, he served as Vin’s inspiration. He knows that because he finds inspiration in his brother.

“Nagiging inspirasyon siya sa akin to work harder. Kami yung nagtutulungan,” stated Aljur.

RIVALRY. Aljur was most emotional during a part of the exclusive interview that touched on him and Vin being pitted against each other in the showbiz arena.

According to Aljur, he and his brother were never compared to each other by anyone until Vin’s foray in Artista Academy.

“Ngayon pa lang. Showbiz pa lang ang nagkukumpara sa amin.

"Kasi nung bata kami, dikit talaga kami, e—hanggang ngayon.”

Asked what was the worst comparison he heard, Aljur reluctantly replied, “Ang mahirap kasi, yung pangit lang yung nakikita nila, e.

Nagmamahalan kami.”

"Kasi ganun yung nangyayari, e, pag masyado kang nagpadala.”

But he knows better. Aljur has faith in the kind of bond he and Vin have.
