Regine Velasquez on what happened at her Silver concert: “There was a lesson for me to learn.”

I have been doing this for twenty-five years...Parang iyon na yun, iyon yung lesson sa akin, na parang everybody was there to celebrate with me. It wasn’t about me showing everybody na I still have it, that I can still do it. It wasn’t about that. It wasn’t about me. It was a celebration… it’s really for the fans!" pahayag

THE VIRUS.

“I’m sick. I got a virus na hindi ko ma-explain.

“Pero sa concert kasi… ang dami ring nagkaroon ng sakit sa amin na pare-parehong walang boses—so I also got it.

“Si Direk Rowell [Santiago, concert director], my sister also had it, my son Nate also had it before me.”

“Actually kasi, two weeks before the concert, my son was already not feeling well.

“He celebrated his birthday two weeks prior to the concert.

“And I brought him to his doctor, so ganun, wala siyang boses, malat siya—as a baby, malat siya!” ang medyo natawang sabi ni Regine.

Patuloy niya, “I was also feeling not very well, pero hindi ko masyadong iniinda.

“Tapos nung week na nga nang magre-rehearse na ako, I was still okay.

“I was singing all my songs ‘coz I needed to rehearse them. ‘Coz although they are my recorded songs, and I’ve sang them many times, marami sa kanila new arrangements.

"So I needed… siyempre ganun naman talaga ang concert. Tsaka sanay ako dun—lahat ng concert, lahat kami dito sa Philippines, ang concert talaga, nagre-rehearse the week before.

“By the time nung performance, batak na batak ka na talaga.

“Unless you get sick.”

CANCELLING THE SHOW. Minutes before the concert, napag-isipan nga ba nilang i-cancel na lang ang show?

Saad ni Regine, “Actually, the night before, yung dress tech namin, which is the fifteenth. So the night before of the concert, I had a fever that day.

“So nag-medicine lang ako but, still, I was okay.

“I was rehearsing but I wasn’t really singing, I was just going with the flow.

“But that night, I noticed na I was already starting to cough, and it was different kasi masakit na masakit ang lalamunan ko.

“But again, I still didn’t think anything of it.

“The morning when I woke up, talagang I had no voice! So I started to panic na!

“I told my husband [Ogie Alcasid], sabi ko, ‘What am I gonna do?’

“Tinawagan ko na yung kapatid ko [Cacai Mitra], sabi ko, ‘Should we cancel the show?’

“Because I didn’t wanna disappoint anybody… and I didn’t wanna disappoint, siyempre, yung sarili ko.

I thought the hardest was to cancel the show.

“It was actually pushing through with the show that was the hardest thing pala I had to do, ‘coz I had no voice.

“And, normally, it was funny because sa lahat ng mga nakakakilala sa akin, I would always tell them na, ‘I don’t have a voice!’ But when I sing [lumalabas]! Yes, I always have it.

“My health will fail me, my brain, my eyesight, my two legs will fail me, but never my voice. Never.

“I’ll open my mouth and, always, my voice will come out.

“For the first time, nothing came out.

“So it was very difficult, but it was a journey for me and it was a lesson.

“There was a lesson for me to learn.”

NOT AFRAID.

“I was telling my husband na… Minutes before the show, I was trying to vocalize, I was still trying to…

“I was hoping for a miracle. I was hoping that something would come out.

“But minutes before the show, I said to him [Ogie], ‘I think I’m gonna be okay.

“And then he said to me after na, ‘Alam ko, you’re gonna be okay.’

“Kasi nakita raw niya na parang in-accept ko na raw na nothing was going to come out.

“And for some reason, I was at peace with that.

“And for the first time also, in my whole entire career, hindi ako natakot.

“I was somehow at peace…

“I don’t know why, but I think it was God telling me na, ‘I’m not gonna give you back your voice, but I will give you something better.’

“The love that I got from my audience that night was very humbling!"

LESSON LEARNED. “So… yes, I did not get back…

“I have been doing this for twenty-five years.

“And siguro, pagbali-baligtarin man, alam n’yo na kung… how I sound when I sing.

“Parang iyon na yun, iyon yung lesson sa akin, na parang everybody was there to celebrate with me.

“It wasn’t about me showing everybody na I still have it, that I can still do it.

“It wasn’t about that. It wasn’t about me.

“It was a celebration… It’s really for the fans!

“Iyon yung experience na very humbling for me kasi I was really expecting talaga for the worst.

“That people would start standing up and leave. I was expecting that.

“I was expecting even na magbu-boo sila or yung magre-refund—I was expecting all of that already.

“But as it turned out, hindi iyon yung nangyari.”

LOVE FROM THE AUDIENCE. Halos lahat din ay kumanta with the Songbird.

“Iyon nga yung nakakatuwa, kasi parang ako dapat yung magpe-perform for them—ang ending, sila yung nag-perform for me.

“So, maraming-maraming salamat sa lahat ng pumunta, nag-stay.

“Yung totoo… kasi may lift yun, di ba, parang may elevation [sa stage].

“Ganun yung feeling ko, pero for some reason, I wasn’t afraid ‘coz I know God was with me.

“Pero first time talaga, at alam ko na hindi talaga siya lalabas, so kaya I just continued on with the show and…

Kuwento ni Regine, “I bought this actually for Nate kasi favorite niya si Elmo.

“So, nung nawalan ako ng boses, na-realize ko na, you know, yung pinakamalaking gift na ibinigay sa akin ni God, si Nate.

“And, you know, for the past six months, I’ve been trying to get back in shape. I’ve been trying to prepare for the concert.

“Para bang binibigyan ko lang ng konting-konting time yung anak ko, so I felt so guilty.

“Parang I’m just giving him very little of my time, parang bibigyan ko siya ng thirty minutes, tapos aalis na ako.

“Two hours or one hour to play with him, tapos aalis na ako.

“And I felt really guilty.

“So nung galing kami ng doctor, pag-uwi ko, yung unang-una kong ginawa was to be with him.

“So I played with him, I stayed with him, and I noticed na…

“I was so quiet the whole time. I wasn’t saying anything, but he was so happy to be with me.

“And that’s why parang the watch became a reminder.

“And I didn’t wanna take it off during the concert even though I look… I probably look silly.”

MANG GERRY & OGIE ALCASID.

“You know, my father, siguro sa lahat ng…

“And of course, my husband, who I’ve been taking for granted for the past six months.

NO REGRETS.

“Pangalawa, I was also crying because I felt so loved.

“So maraming-maraming salamat.

“Thank you, thank you very much.

“And like I said kanina, akala ko nga the hardest thing to do is to just cancel the show…

“Actually, that would have been easier, e—to cancel it.

“I mean, siyempre, magbabayad lang kami and all, pero pera lang yun, e.

“Mas mahirap yung… mas mahirap palang to continue with the show.

“Right now, wala pa. And it will be a free concert.

“Kasi parang, ‘Ha?! Saan tayo kukuha ng pang-produce niyan?’

“Kaya lang, nung bumalik ako ng backstage, she asked me, ‘Are you serious about the free concert? Kasi if you are, I think you should announce na for everybody to keep their tickets, to hold on to their tickets.’

“Kasi iyon din yung gagamitin nila for the free concert.

“Kasi feeling ko, my audience deserve so much more dun sa ipinakita ko nung gabi.

“Although I have to tell you, guys, na grabe po yung pagmamahal at suporta na ipinakita ninyo sa akin.

“And this time, I’m not gonna… hindi na ako magkakaroon ng attitude na, ‘Oh, okay!’

“But this time, I don’t wanna have that kind of attitude.

“I will go there. If you guys will show up, I will wait for you there!

“And I will just entertain you sa best na makakaya ko.”

“Thank you so much to MOA Arena for allowing us to stage this concert again, for free!

“Nagpapasalamat din ako kay Ryan Cayabyab, kay Maestro Ryan Cayabyab, who stood there with me, who was with me.

“And, of course, my brother-in-law who I love very much—si Raul Mitra, who’s giving me water [during the concert] and…

“And knowing him, siguro parang ‘Sige, ibibigay ko na lang sa iyo ang boses ko!”

“Yung ganyan siya, ganyan nila ako kamahal.

“Maraming-maraming salamat sa aking mga musicians. Sila Cesar Aguas, lahat yun, and the Hotlegs—they offered their services for free.”

“We will announce the date, the exact date…

“The venue is the same, it’s going to be the same people, kasi lahat yun, they offered their services for free.

“At siyempre, taus-puso akong nagpapasalamat sa GMA kasi maski sila, gagawin nila ulit! Take two, for free!

"So, maraming-maraming salamat kay FLG [Atty. Felipe L. Gozon, GMA network big boss]...

"Ninong, thank you very, very much for your support and for your love. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

“And can I just also say thank you to my sisters—my sisters Diane, Deca, and my producer Cacai.

“And, of course, my brother.

“Gusto ko ring pasalamatan yung asawa ko. He never left my side, the whole time he was with me holding my hand.

“Maraming-maraming salamat, Honey!

"Ikaw talaga yung naging inspirasyon ko, kaya ko itinuloy yung concert.

“Most of all, nagpapasalamat ako kay Lord.

“Thank you, God, for teaching me a lesson.

“It’s really not about me, it’s not about me showing everybody that I still have it, that I still can do this—it’s not about that.

“Thank you for giving me itong humility na ibinigay Mo sa akin.

“Maraming-maraming salamat, Lord.

“And like I said, in God’s perfect time, we will do this concert again, and I will do this concert with Him.”
