TV host and former actor Paolo Abrera on possibility of transferring to TV5 from ANC: “Inaantay ko pa nga ang offer, e.”

“I’m very much open to it. For me it’s about personal growth and growth in your work and in your career. I think if the stars align, na medyo maganda yung puwede nating gawin dun, why not?” sabi ni Paolo Abrera nang tanungin kung posible ba siyang lumipat sa TV5, gaya ni Paolo Bediones. Ang huli ay dating kasama ni Paolo at ng misis niyang si Suzi Entrata-Abrera sa GMA-7.

Regular host si Paolo Abrera ng Mornings @ ANC at meron pa siyang hino-host na show na Green Living.

“That’s every Tuesday, and it’s parang an eco-lifestyle program,” saad ni Paolo.

Magtu-two and a half years na siya ngayon sa ANC, ang cable-only news channel ng ABS-CBN.

Bakit nga ba siya lumipat ng istasyon?

“There were great opportunities being offered at ANC.

“I think also, with the repositioning of the channel, I think I’m much more effective in the format of ANC.

“I was being given those opportunities, and with ANC kasi, parang pasok sa target audience ng ANC yung programa. So that was a big factor, to be able to do that,” pahayag ni Paolo nang makausap ng PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal).

FORMER ACTOR. Dati ring sinubukan ni Paolo ang pag-arte.

“I did, during the nineties. It was the height of the San Miguel Beer Sabado Nights ad that branched out into a spinoff movie, and then, eventually, I also did Star Cinema’s Radio Romance.”

Bakit hindi niya itinuloy ang pag-aartista?

“Parang I think at that time... I mean now, I really admire the way Philippine cinema has developed, and at that time parang nabibitin ako sa movies that we could make.

“They weren’t the movies I would like to make, not to mention the movie business in the end is still a business.

“So, I think you have to prove your worth in terms of marketability and such. So, parang I think I was so much effective doing more hosting-oriented work.”

Maituturing na ang ka-level niya as a host ay sina Marc Nelson at Rovilson Fernandez.

“They’re good friends,” ani Paolo tungkol kina Marc at Rovilson.

“Ako, I’m happy to be mentioned in the same sentence with them.”

What about Paolo Bediones? Pareho silang nangggaling sa GMA.

“Si Beds, I think we’re at an age kasi naman—in our time and age, in our lives, in our career—where we’re looking towards broadening yung mga ginagawa namin.

“And I think Beds is also at a point where he’s exploring other avenues where he finds a great deal of satisfaction, which aren’t necessarily in the limelight or in the spotlight.

“So, in terms of measuring what he’s doing now on-cam or in the spotlight, medyo less, because he’s doing more corporate-oriented work na ngayon, na medyo behind the scenes.”

“There were a couple of inquiries and a couple of talks, I think.

“I’m very much open to it. For me it’s about personal growth and growth in your work and in your career.

“I think if the stars align, na medyo maganda yung puwede nating gawin dun, why not?”

Ilang years ang contract niya sa ANC?

“Every year, we renew.

“But that being said, I’m quite thankful and happy with all the opportunities that I have with ANC.”

So by January, may possibility na mag-transfer siya sa ibang station?

“I wouldn’t call it transferring. I would say I’m always on the lookout for enriching one’s knowledge and broadening one’s experience.

“You have to keep on learning. So, I always try to keep an eye out for opportunities that help you learn more.”

BALANCING WORK AND FAMILY.

Panay babae ang anak nina Paolo at Suzi: Leona, 9 years old, Jade, 8, at Nella, 6.

Mahirap ba ang pagbabalanse ng work at family life na ginagawa niya?

“Yeah, very, very difficult. Medyo mahirap nga.

“For me, I keep saying that the key word for me is balance.

“It’s medyo always a constant struggle kung paano mo babalansehin yung time and the responsibilities you have—to yourself, to do the best work that you can, and also to your children, to be a father and, of course, to your wife, to be a husband.

“It’s challenging. Medyo mahirap siya, but we do the best we can and we try to keep the lines of communication always open.

“Na pag, ‘Ang tagal mo nang busy, ah. Let’s spend naman some time together.’

“You know, I think that’s the key. Over the years, iyon yung natutunan namin ni Suzi, na parang always let the other know what’s going on para hindi kayo naghuhulaan.”

Ito nga raw ang sikreto ng eleven years of marriage nila ni Suzi.

“Iyon nga, e. I think it’s such a cliché to say, ‘Communicate.’ Pero iyon talaga yun, e.

“And I think to stay genuinely in love with each other, you have to.

“That’s a feeling that’s nurtured, that’s a feeling that you continue to feed, and that’s a feeling that you continue to cultivate.

“Kailangan dinidiligan mo yun, kailangan inaalagan mo yun.

“You don’t find time to spend with your partner, you make time, you know.

“So, pakiramdaman mo, when you feel like you haven’t spent enough time, you have to make time to spend.

“When you feel like you have been given the time, you have to express that, and you need to tell your partner, ‘I need more of your time.’

“Communicate,” diin pa ni Paolo.

Kung ide-describe ni Paolo ang sarili niya as a father in one word, ano yun?

“I hope it’s ’fun!’ I hope, I hope,” ang natatawa niyang sagot.

As a husband, ano naman siya in one word?

“Sana ’fun’ din,” sabay-tawa niyang muli.

“I think… what’s the word? Dependable.”

LIVING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE.

Ayon naman kay Paolo, “I like to work with brands nga that I believe and agree with.

“I was really doing this one since last year, when it was known as Revicon Max.

“I really like the advocacy that they have about, you know, talking about keeping a healthy relationship between a husband and wife, and that sort of develops now into where the advocacy is now.

“They talk about touch as being a very important part of a relationship.”

“I try to live a healthy lifestyle to begin with. I think, generally, that’s why you get approached by companies to be brand ambassadors.

“I think rather than being parang, ‘Ito yung image ng brand, ikaw ang sumunod sa brand,’ I think it’s more like the brand likes to associate itself with people who live an ideal lifestyle.”

Mahirap bang magkaroon ng healthy lifestyle?

“No, not at all,” mabilis na sagot ni Paolo.

“Ako, personally, I’m not a health nut. I’m not a health freak. I try to live a more balanced lifestyle.

“I think nagkataon lang na many of my habits and many of my preferences happen to be healthier choices, pero I enjoy indulgences also,” sabay-tawa ni Paolo.

“I don’t think of it as cheating. I really just think of it as balance, you know.

“Kasi yung cheating, that connotes na meron kang ginagawa na, or ginagawa mo ang… You’re living a lifestyle na ayaw mong gawin, that’s why you have to cheat. And so you know, ‘cheat.’

“But I think my lifestyle, our lifestyle, as a couple is generally healthy to begin with.

“And more than just being healthy, it’s balanced. And it’s the way we live our lives, so it works out well.”
