Martin Nievera, Pops Fernandez, Ogie Alcasid, and Regine Velasquez reveal songs of each other they wish they’ve recorded

Martin Nievera, Pops Fernandez, Ogie Alcasid, and Regine Velasquez have been in the music industry for almost three decades and recorded more than hundred songs. PEP asked these music icons the song of each other they wished they’ve recorded themselves.

POPS’S FAVORITE OGIE SONG.

“’Kailangan Kita,’ aside from ‘Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang.’

Ogie is such a senti guy, di ba?

“Kasi yung Tagalog lyrics niya, talagang nakaka-relate ka.

“Lalo na pag medyo hopeless romantic ka, which I think most of us are—lalung-lalo na yung mga Pinoy dito sa Pilipinas.

“Parang pag pinakinggan mo, aside from the beautiful melody, pag pinakinggan mo yung Tagalog lyrics niya, nakaka-in love, nakakaiyak, o gusto mong mag-slash ng wrist, kasi ang sad-sad niya.

“Pero that’s what we like as Pinoys, di ba?”

OGIE’S FAVORITE MARTIN SONG. Sumunod namang sumagot si Ogie.

“Kay Martin? You know, when I was in high school…” simula ng tinaguriang Songwriter.

“No, this is true…” patuloy ni Ogie.

Singit naman ni Pops, “Gusto ko ‘yon, ‘When I was in elementary…’”

“I was third year high school, and I had your… ‘The Best Gift.’ That would play on my car the whole time.

“And then I would imagine that I was Martin Nievera. Talagang I was aping him in my car—so I looked like an ape!” biro pa ni Ogie.

Pero dagdag niya, “Really, I was a huge fan. So, being side by side with him, is an honor and a dream come true for me.

“He probably doesn’t know…”

Singit naman ni Martin, “First I’ve heard of it. I thought you like Gary [Valenciano], e.”

Ogie: “Of course, I like Gary.”

Martin: “No, I mean, I saw it like when you guys do, with you and Janno [Gibbs], your show. He’s like, ‘Janno is the Martin guy and you’re the Gary guy.’ So, I’m touched!”

Ogie: “No, kasi Janno is more of a baritone, right? So he’s like you.”

Martin: “Yes, and you and Gary have the same [range] and you’re both Kundirana.”

Ogie: “Yeah, and we both came to the same school. But, I’m still a balladeer.”

Sabi pa ni Ogie, “Martin has… and I’m not joking, really, bar none, you have the best voice, male voice I’ve ever heard—in this room!"

Nagtawanan ang lahat sa biro ni Ogie.

“No, no… no, honestly, talaga, when you hear Martin Nievera… Pero talaga, he has a wonderful baritone voice—bar none.

“Talagang ang ganda ng boses. He just opens his mouth and there it is—it’s magic.”

REGINE & POPS’S FAVORITE SONGS. Si Regine naman ang sumunod na nagsalita.

Sabi ng Asia’s Songbird, “I like… one of the songs na gustung-gusto kong ni-record ni Pops, yung ‘Dito.’”

I remember yung ‘Don’t Say Goodbye.’”

Singit ni Martin, “I wrote that.”

Sagot naman ni Regine: “I knew that… And then with Martin, I’ve always liked, which I recorded, yung ‘Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin.’

“Tapos yung ‘How Can I,’ di ko pa nare-record! Ire-record ko yun!”

“REGINE CAN SING THE PHONEBOOK.” Sabi naman ni Martin, “Regine can sing any song…”

Sambit ni Regine, “No, hindi naman…”

Sabi pa ni Martin, "Actually, I have a complaint… My complaint is every time Regine sings your song, it always sounds better.”

Kaya pakiusap ni Martin kay Regine, “So can you stop, please, recording my songs?

"Because after she sings it, I cannot sing it anymore!

“Like, for instance, ‘Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin…’ But when Regine does your song, it becomes her song.

"So, please, stop it…

“We did a show together, Regine and I—this is a true story—‘Let’s exchange songs.’

"So I sang ‘Narito Ako,’ she sang ‘Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin.’

“She had a standing ovation, I forgot the words!

“So if I were to record any song of Regine, it would be ‘Narito Ako’ because I owe her.”

Sabi naman ni Martin: “But Regine for me, she can sing the phone book. It’s true.”

MARTIN’S FAVORITE OGIE SONG.

“Then Ogie naman, when I was in elementary school…” simula ni Martin bilang ganti sa sinabi ni Ogie na “when I was in high school.”

Pero seryoso na niyang sabi, “Ogie is a very gifted… not only a great singer, he’s such a great songwriter which you already know.

“So, if I were to choose a song… kunyari I didn’t record ‘Ikaw Ang Aking Pangarap,’ that’s the song I would love to record.

“Because it’s a perfect song—the lyrics, the flow… You can sing it in a wedding, funeral… whichever. And it works.

“It’s one of those songs I think will be timeless, would be there forever.”

REGINE’S FAVORITE OGIE SONG.

Pero nagseryoso na si Regine at sinabing, ‘Hindi, pagka kasi nagsusulat siya [Ogie], sabi niya, ‘Honey, this is for you.’

“So I complained to him. Parang, ‘Akala ko ba sa akin ‘yan? E, bakit kinakanta ni Martin?’

“Binibigay niya.”

Singit naman ni Martin, “It’s written for you, about you…”

So, ayun.

“Siguro ako, one day, gusto kong i-record yung mga songs na isinulat ng asawa ko but I never got to record.

“So one day I’ll do that.”

Singit ulit ni Martin tungkol kay Ogie, “Can I add one more thing? You [Ogie] think you learned from me, I also learned from you.

“When I used to listen to Ogie’s songs, I learned one of his… yung style niya na ginamit ko sa isang song, yung…”

“I learned it from him.”

Sabi naman ni Martin kay Regine, “You’re not in love with him yet, I was already in love with him.”

Dagdag ng Concert King, “And every song he writes, doesn’t sound like the one he wrote before. Ang hirap yun, a! It takes a genius to do that.”

POPS’ FAVORITE MARTIN SONG.

“’I’ll Be There For You’ because it’s also for the kids [Robin and Ram]. I think that’s a sweet song.

“It’s not a joke, it’s for real…”

Hirit pa ni Pops, “Dapat ‘You Are My Song,’ but I know it’s not for me. So, ‘I’ll Be There For You’ na lang…”

“MOST PAINFUL SONG.”

“One of the most painful songs I ever wrote, look for it, ‘coz I never sing it, I only sang it once, and I swore to God I will never sing it again. I wrote it…

“You don’t even know the story…” sabi niya kay Pops.

“I wrote a song, I received my papers—you know my walking papers?” pagtukoy ni Martin sa annulment papers nila ni Pops.

“Picture this, I’m in my empty apartment, no furniture.

“Someone knocks on the door and says, ‘Hi, are you Martin Nievera?’ Duh! No, I said, ‘Yeah, I am.’

“Just in my boxer shorts, no shirt, nothing. And my hair, bagong gising pa.

“And then the guy gives me these papers and goes like this to me [sabay tapik sa braso ni Pops].

“I don’t know why. Why do they have to touch you? You know that?”

Singit ni Ogie, “Yeah, that’s… it’s a summon.”

Tanong ni Martin, “Have you been served?”

Sagot ni Ogie: “Yeah, I know that…”

Tanong ulit ni Martin: “How come you know?... Okay, never mind.”

Patuloy na kuwento ni Martin, “So I take the paper, I take this very thick stack of papers, I take it and then I slapped [tapik] they guy.

“‘Thank you,’ sabi ko. And then I looked at the papers…”

Tanong naman ni Pops, “What’s the song?”

Sagot ni Martin, “Wait, I’m getting there…

“So I sat down and then I looked at the papers… and then I was in shock.

“So my manager at that time, Joji Dingcong, comes to the apartment, says, ‘Are you okay?’

“I said, ‘Can you pass me my yellow pad?’

“And I wrote a song, it’s called ‘Before You Say Goodbye.’

“I sang it once, I broke down like a freak…”

Sabi pa ni Martin kay Pops, “I cannot sing with you beside me, are you kidding?”

Dagdag niya, “It was included in my live CD that I did in CCP and also some other album.

“Believe me, I never sang it. I swear I would never sing it again.”

Narito ang kantang “Before You Say Goodbye” na isinulat ni Martin matapos matanggap ang annulment papers nila ni Pops:
