Sam Milby says he has improved his Tagalog for new teleserye with Judy Ann Santos

Sam Milby says about improving his Tagalog for his new teleserye, Against All Odds, "Siyempre, yung level ni Judy Ann na napakagaling talaga, ayaw ko na ma-suffer yung acting ko dahil sa Tagalog. So kailangan talagang todo talaga yung lahat. I mean, concentration sa Tagalog, sa character, sa lahat-lahat."

While still enjoying the success of his primetime drama, Kahit Konting Pagtingin, Sam Milby is set to do another teleserye this year, Against All Odds.

Sam will star with Judy Ann Santos, KC Concepcion, John Estrada, Mylene Dizon, Tirso Cruz III, Coney Reyes, Empress Schuck, and Joseph Marco, among others. (Philippine Entertainment Portal) had a chat with Sam last February 22 at the 14th floor of ABS-CBN’s ELJ Building.

Judy Ann Santos was quoted as saying that Sam had commendable acting skills but only needed to brush-up on his Tagalog.

Sam reacted, “Yeah, actually happy ako na kahit papano tumigil yung taping namin sa Against All Odds, tapos nag-start kami sa KKP [Kahit Konting Pagtingin], kasi nag-improve yung Tagalog ko.

“And I think malaking tulong din ito sa Against All Odds dahil medyo nag-improve na ko sa Tagalog. E, siyempre mas magiging magandang palabas ang Against All Odds, di ba?”

The show began taping last year but took a hiatus and resumed only recently.

Sam explained, “Last year kasi nag-start kami ng taping, hindi ako masyadong nag-aaral nung time na yun.

“E, ngayon, sobrang todo na yung pag-aaral ng Tagalog. Meron na kong tutor.

“May tutor ako, si Tita Daisy Cariño. Siya yung dubbing director, siya yung nagturo din kay Gerald [Anderson]. Magaling talaga siya.”

Though it hasn’t been easy for him, Sam claims that his Tagalog is far better now compared to the last time he shot a scene with Judy Ann.

He maintains, “So ayun, unti-unti na gumagaling. Pero siyempre may accent minsan, may mga times na talagang nahihirapan talaga ko.”

“But the important thing is nag-iimprove talaga ko and with Judy Ann na first time na makakasama ko siya.

“Siyempre, yung level ni Judy Ann na napakagaling talaga, ayaw ko na ma-suffer yung acting ko dahil sa Tagalog.

“So kailangan talagang todo talaga yung lahat. I mean, concentration sa Tagalog, sa character, sa lahat-lahat.

“So right now I can say, yung desire ko to grow as a person, as an actor, as an artist, it’s never been this great.

“Parang I just wanna keep growing so much in everything, so happy ako, happy ako ngayon and I’m grateful.”

CAST LINE-UP. From last year’s original casting, several changes have been made on the line-up of cast members because of factors such as schedule conflicts and other projects.

Jericho Rosales was supposed to be a part of the cast. John Estrada, who at one point was already out, will be part of the final casting.

Sam explained, “Yung original cast kasama talaga si John Estrada. Yung role na ’yan [Patricio Sandoval], John Estrada.

“Tapos nagkaroon ng A Beautiful Affair kaya hindi niya puwedeng gawin yung Against All Odds.

“So dahil tumigil na kami sa taping, e, hindi naman natuloy yung taping namin at the time, natapos na yung A Beautiful Affair and dapat nga si Jericho [Rosales] ang naging kasama na sa teleserye and then I don’t know what actually happened with that.

“But, ayun, dahil tapos na yung taping ng A Beautiful Affair and si Jericho hindi na kasama, si John Estrada ulit kasama sa teleserye.”

Isn’t there any conflict between their characters as the leading men of the soap?

Sam replies, “Hindi rin. Napakalaking role din yun kay John Estrada. Magkaiba yung roles namin, e.

“So, ayoko na lang i-spoil. Basta very important din yung role niya. It’s a leading-man role din.

“So, like yung sinasabi ko, yung role ko very gray na character, so…basta ayoko na ikuwento masyado, basta parehas yung role namin importante.

“Lalo na sa first part. Mas nakikita yung character ko. And then it’s more after the first few weeks na mas magiging strong yung character ni John.”
