SARAWAK, MALAYSIA – March 27, Miyerkules, noong umalis ng bansa ang Philippine delegates ng 1st ASEAN International Film Festival and Awards (AIFFA) 2013, lulan ng Flight MH 0805 ng Malaysian Airlines patungo rito sa Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia (with a connecting flight from Kuala Lumpur).

Kasama ang PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) sa Pinoy entourage na nagtungo dito upang saksihan ang unang taon ng nasabing film festival. Maliban sa Pilipinas, ang iba pang participating Asian countries ay: Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Brunei, Myanmar, and Laos.

Mula sa iba’t ibang indie films na nai-submit ng filmmakers, short-listed ang 13 Pinoy films na opisyal na naipadala ng Pilipinas. Ito ay ang Alagwa by Ian Loreños, Sta. Niña by Emmanuel Palo, Posas by Lawrence Fajardo, Ang Nawawala by Marie Jamora, Oros by Paul Sta. Ana, Colossal by Whammy Alcazaren.

Supremo by Richard Somes, The Grave Bandits by Tyrone Acierto, Aparisyon by Vincent Sandoval, Mga Kidnappers ni Ronnie Lazaro and In Bangka Ha Ut Sin Duwa Sapah (The Boat Between Two Rivers) both by Sigfreid Barros-Sanchez, Qiyamah by Gutierrez Mangansakan II, and The Animals by Gino Santos.

Nauna nang dumating dito noong March 26, Martes, ang award-winning actor and director na si Ricky Davao, dahil kasama siya sa jury panel.

Ang mga Pinoy delegates na nandito for AIFFA ay sina Jericho Rosales (for Alagwa), Dominic Roco (for Ang Nawawala), indie filmmakers na sina Ian Loreños (Alagwa), Paul Sta. Ana (Oros), Whammy Alcazaren (Colossal), at cinematographer and head of Philippine delegation Rain Yamson II.

Sumunod lang sa biyahe noong March 28 ang actor-producer-councilor Alfred Vargas (Supremo) at maybahay nitong si Yasmine Espiritu, at filmmaker Lawrence Fajardo (Posas).

Naiwan ng eroplano ang aktres na si Glaiza de Castro. Halos 2-3 minutes lang siyang na-late, pero napagsaraduhan na siya ng boarding entrance ng eroplano ng Malaysian Airlines. Kasama sana si Glaiza para maging presentor sa awards night.

Sumunod kahapon (March 29) ang singer na si Ima Castro (nasa cast ng Ms. Saigon from 2001-2006) upang mag-perform sa Awards Night mamayang gabi (March 30) na gaganapin sa Borneo Convention Center sa Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.

Bilang suporta ay kasama rin si Mark Lapid (COO ng Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority o TIEZA, na dating Philippine Tourism Authority), actor-filmmaker Jess Lapid Jr., TIEZA Corplan Manager Jetro Lozada and technical assistant Fidel Arcenas, and Ricardo Sanchez.

Kasama rin for moral support kay Jericho ang magandang girlfriend nito at Etcetera host na si Kim Jones; ang actress, former Bb. Pilipinas-World and now Pateros councilor Daisy Reyes; new short filmmaker Paolo Reyes; Marinez Elizalde (Jericho’s handler); Rappler entertainment and lifestyle editor Kai Magsanoc; columnist Pilar Mateo, at ang writer na ito.

Hindi nakarating sa Malaysia ang Philippine Liason Director na si Dante Nico Garcia dahil sa personal na kadahilanan, ngunit nandoon naman nga ang head of the Philipppine delegates na si Yamson.

MORE THAN 100 FILMS. Ang mahigit 100 films mula sa participating countries (66 full length films and 47 short films, both student and professional), ay pinagpilian ng mga organizers headed by AIFFA Festival Director na si Ms. Livan Tajang (of Malaysia).

Mula sa mga natirang entry ay muling pinagpilian ang mga ito para sa mga magiging semi-finalists at ito ang pinanood ng mga hurado.

Ang limang jury members ay sina: U-Wei Haji Saari (jury head/one of Asia’s most respected film directors; the first Malaysian to have his work selected for the Cannes Filmfest); Deborah Gabinetti (founder and director of Bali Film Center, Indonesia); Jack Neo Chee Keong (blockbuster Singaporean film director; one of the most prolific filmmakers in Singapore); U Aung Lwin (an accomplished actor and film director for five decades from Myanmar); at ang ating very own na si Ricky Davao.

ECHO MANIA! Pagdating pa lang ng grupo sa Kuching Airport, nandoon na ang mga avid Malaysian fans ni Jericho na may hawak na “I Luv Echo” placards at nakasuot pa ng Echo T-shirts.

Ramdam dito na popular si Echo sa Malaysian fans dahil kahit na ang immigration officers sa airport ay magiliw na nagpa-picture taking sa actor.

May isa pang kumanta ng Pangako Sa ‘Yo one-liner, hango sa teleserye ni Echo at Kristine Hermosa na tunay na sumikat dito noong first time itong na-ere 10 years ago at muling nai-ere sa isang local channel kamakailan dahil sa clamor ng mga fans.

Kasakuluyan ding palabas sa local TV dito ang Sana’y Wala Nang Wakas ni Jericho.

Kahit saang function nga magpunta si Jericho ay hindi puwedeng walang lumapit sa kanya at magpa-picture, lalo na ang mga kababaihan at kabataan. Isang grupo pa rin ang nagbigay ng gifts sa kanilang idolo (collage ng photos niya), pati sa GF nitong Kim.

OPENING CEREMONIES. Sa opening ceremonies ng three-day event ng AIFFA noong Huwebes (March 28), naging bongga, masaya, at makulay ang lahat sa Sarawak Cultural Village (Kuching, Malaysia), habang nagkakaisang ipinagdiwang ang “film medium” na naging salamin ng kultura ng bawat bansang kalahok.

Ang makasaysayang cultural heritage ng Malaysia ay nai-showcase sa magarbong production numbers sa sinasabing pinakamalaking pagtitipon ng mga tao sa film industry (new and seasoned actors and filmmakers, producers) sa kabuuan ng ASEAN countries.

Noong gabi ring ‘yon, sa isang sit-down dinner, pormal na in-announce ang official nominees sa full length films category, at ipinagkaloob naman ang winners ng short films category.

Kalaban ni Jericho ay isang Singaporean, isang Malaysian, at dalawang Indonesians. Dalawang Indonesians and Malaysians naman ang kalaban ni Alessandra.

“Ma-nominate lang tayo, winner na, dahil international film festival ito... buong ASEAN,” masayang banggit ni Jericho nang kunan ng reaksiyon ng PEP, habang kasabay naming nagdi-dinner.

“Bonus na lang ‘pag pinalad tayo,” dagdag niya.

Ang child actor naman na si Bugoy ay pawing mga adult actors ang katunggali— isang Singaporean, isang Malaysian, at dalawang Indonesians. Pinakamasaya ang Alagwa writer-director na si Direk Ian Loreños sa balitang ito.

Ang veteran actress namang si Ms. Anita ay co-nominees ng tig-isang Malaysian at Myanmar at dalawang Indonesians.

Ang pelikula namang Sta. Niña ay nominado as Best Picture - Drama at Best Editing, samantalang ang Mga Kidnapper ni Ronnie Lazaro ay nominated as Best Picture – Comedy, directed by Sigfreid Barros-Sanchez

Mula pa sa entrance ay tunay na naging mainit ang pagtanggap sa international delegates, like sinasabitan ng native necklace, may headdress na gawa sa coconut leaves, at may mga ethnic/ cultural bands na tumutugtog ng tambol.

“Movies at the Rain Forest” ang theme, dahil ang mga pelikula ay mapapanood sa kakaibang venue na nagmistulang rain forest, na may malaking damuhan sa gitna kunsaan nandoon ang white screen.

Bumaha rin ng masasarap ng pagkain, mula sa welcome drinks and local delicacies, hanggang sa main dinner na ikinabusog ng lahat. Pinalakpakan ang fluvial opening show na may ibinubugang apoy ang performers sa lakeside.

Sa laki ng cultural village, iba’t ibang “activity” ang makikita all over, celebrating Asian films, na ang ambience ay kultura ng Borneo.
