Less than a year after working with two of the hottest actresses in showbiz today, Paulo Avelino cannot say who between Jennylyn Mercado and Lovi Poe is more beautiful.
The actor is cast in the sexy romantic-comedy The Bride and The Lover that narrates how two women and best friends, played by Jennylyn and Lovi, turn against each other after an act of betrayal.
“Para sa akin kasi, walang mas maganda o mas lamang sa kanilang dalawa dahil both represent the look… dalawa sa mga Filipina beauty, Filipina looks,” Paulo told a group of media reporters in a solo press conference held today, April 17, at the Imperial Palace Suites, Quezon City.
The actor pointed out, “One is very Pinay-looking, morena. Yung isa naman isa the mestiza type.
“They are at par. They have their own… may sarili silang qualities na unique sa isa’t isa and wala ka talagang masasabi kung sino talaga ang mas maganda.”
The Bride and the Lover enjoys solo opening in theaters on May 1, Labor Day, a regular holiday when the public can find time to see Joel Lamangan’s latest film.
Teasingly asked which actress kissed better, Paulo laughed and said he cannot say.
“Para sa akin kasi, cinematically, I can’t really gauge kasi, kumbaga, kung ano naman yung hinihingi ng director, inaarte namin.”
SEXY SCENES. Paulo particularly found shooting the love scenes with his co-actors difficult.
He was always cautious: “Kumbaga, ayaw ko rin naman kasi na may ginagawa ako na mao-offend or yung partner mo mababastos.”
To break the ice prior to executing the steamy scenes, Paulo communicates with his leading ladies.
“Kinakausap or minsan kasi tinatantiya… Ako kasi tinatantiya ko sa ibinibigay ng partner.
“Kung ano ibinibigay nila, yun na lang. Sinasabayan ko na lang.”
The guidance of director Joel Lamangan, according to the Gawad Urian-winning actor, was helpful.
Known to be a strict director, Paulo said Direk Joel always “asked for more, for something higher” from his actors.
“Parang if we do a scene, pag nakukulangan siya, he’ll ask for more, e. Lalo if it’s awkward, parang hindi kayo nagko-connect.
“So, we just keep on repeating the scene hanggang makita yung connection namin.”
JENNYLYN AND LOVI. Interestingly, it is Paulo’s first time to work on a film with Jennylyn, who used to be his co-network talent prior to his transfer to the ABS-CBN Network.
Paulo and Jennylyn both started out in GMA-7’s reality star search, StarStruck. Paulo was part of Season 4 while Jennylyn was the female winner in Season 1.
Despite working with her for the first time, Paulo found no reason to feel awkward around the 25-year-old actress.
The actor likewise said that their personal relationships do not get in the way of filming the sexy scenes.
Jennylyn has been in a relationship with TV host-actor Luis Manzano for two years now.
“Kahit siguro si Lovi or si Jennylyn or even me, kahit may partner siguro kami, I mean … alam siguro ng mga partners namin na it’s work.”
Paulo keeps it professional as well with Lovi, who he previously worked with in the films Aswang and Yesterday Today Tomorrow.
Lovi is also cast in the upcoming Cinemalaya 2013 entry Sana Dati by independent filmmaker Jerrold Tarog.
According to Paulo, he and Lovi never developed a relationship beyond friendship.
He reasoned, “We’re co-workers… siguro we just both want to keep it that way for future projects or shows or films para walang awkwardness sa amin.”
FAMILY TIME. At the first quarter of 2013, Paulo’s plate was full.
The actor, at some point, was taping for the now defunct afternoon soap Kahit Konting Pagtingin, and shooting three films—The Bride and The Lover and two Cinemalaya 2013 independent film entries, Debosyon and Sana Dati.
In Alvin Yapan’s Debosyon, the actor plays the character of a male devotee to the Lady of Peñafrancia. In the film, Paulo gets to speak in Rinconada, an old Bicolano dialect.
Meanwhile, in Jerrold Tarog’s Sana Dati, the actor takes on the role of a videographer who develops a “connection” with a soon-to-be-bride while working on her wedding video. The bride in the film is played by Lovi Poe.
Taking on four roles at once never got confusing for Paulo who said he worked from Monday to Sunday.
When PEP asked the actor if he loses time for his partner, actress LJ Reyes, and their son Ethan Akio, Paulo replied, “Hindi naman, hindi naman.
“Dahil kumbaga, eventually something’s gonna end. The film is gonna end, the soap is gonna end.
“Right now, medyo madami nang oras.
“So, I make sure pag may oras ako, or if I have extra time, I make sure I spend it with the special people in my life.”
Did his family ever get jealous of his work?
“Hindi naman,” said Paulo. “I do things not just for myself but also for them.”
His son turns three this year. Does Paulo fear on missing out on his son’s formative years considering he spends quite an amount of time at work?
The actor replied, “Hindi naman, hindi naman.
"Like what I’ve said, yung mga oras ko na libre, ibinibigay ko sa kanya.”
When asked if he still gets to spend time with LJ, Paulo smiled and courteously said that he refuses to answer any further.
He started, “With all due respect… I’ve already said too much and I just want to keep things for myself, treasure things for myself.”
