G Tongi does not regret leaving blooming career in the Philippines to try her luck in the U.S.

G Tongi on former Music Bureau co-host Radha Tinsay: "Yes, people are talking about her weight but the fact that she is comfortable talking about it says a lot about her. It shows that she’s a real person, kasi kung makikinig ka nang makikinig sa mga tao, ‘Ay ganito, ay ganyan,’ you won’t be able to achieve what you want to do in your life.

"I wouldn’t say na I enjoy one over the other kasi iba-iba yung proseso, di ba?

"And then, you only do a short run of a month and then tapos na. That’s also the beauty of theater.

So, I studied for two years in Lee Strasberg.

“And I did a lot of plays in the States while I was auditioning and bar tending.”

“I’m doing my first Repertory of the Philippines show. I’m doing The Producers, I’m Ulla—that’s the character of Uma Thurman in the movie.

"And I’m still writing.”

CAREER SHIFT. Kasalukuyan ding umeere sa GMA Pinoy TV North America ang reality show na siya mismo ang nagdirek at nag-produce—ang The Basco Balikbayan Project.

“I just finished producing my first TV show—directed and produced. Ibinenta ko siya sa GMA International.

“Kasi as a producer, sa tagal kong nawala, that’s my market, e. I understand the second generation Fil-Am market.

“Because these are the people I go to school with, naging barkada ko dun.

“And they’re very hungry to know what it means to be Filipino pero hindi na sila nagta-Tagalog.

“They don’t watch TFC or GMA Pinoy TV because they don’t understand Tagalog.

“So, I understand that market.

"I want to produce for that market because it’s about finding yourself, what it means to become a Filipino, encouraging them to come to the Philippines.”

“I’m doing my next show. The Balikbayan Project pa rin pero the ‘Goodwill Edition.’

“I want to feature 13 different NGOs in the Philippines na transparent yung pagdo-donate.

“It’s more feature documentary, but with a mix of reality because I want to show how people are living.”

“Romantic-comedy [and] coming of age that also tackles the plight of being a Filipino in a different country.”

THE AMERICAN DREAM.

Kuwento ni G, “That’s how I was able to pay for my bills.

“I tried to be a waitress, too, but I’m not good at it.

“It’s hard, it’s very hard.

Aniya, “If there’s anything I’ve learned from being away for twelve years, it’s that life is not just showbiz, glamour, picture-taking [and] autographs. It’s doing real stuff.

“I want to be able to really differentiate myself because... I’m not a movie star.

"I’ve been striving to be an artist, I want to be an artist. I want to be an actor. I want to be a producer.

“Si Boots Plata once told me, ‘Actresses last a lifetime.’ And that has always stuck with me na, ‘Yeah, that’s true, you know?’

Aniya, “People ask me, ‘Hindi ka ba nanghihinayang [sa career]?’ [Sabi ko] ‘No, Why?

“I think, when I left, a lot of people say that I was at the peak of my career. But I know, had I stayed, I would’ve have been given more opportunities.

“So I don’t think... if I look back, I can’t think that because I never want to regret the decisions I made.

"Kasi nung umalis ako, for the first time, I lived on my own.”

HAPPY FAMILY.

Paglilinaw ni G, “When I came, back a year and four months ago, a lot of people were speculating na hiwalay na.

“Actually, happy story kami, e.

"Apat kaming dumating [dito]—my husband, my daughter, [and] my son and seventy balikbayan boxes.”

“For now, we don’t have a plan.

"I think dito muna kami, the kids are growing up.

“I want them to be accustomed to Filipino culture. Importante yun, e.

Paliwanag pa ng aktres, “I have a seven-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy.

"E, lumalaki sila na hindi nagta-Tagalog. It’s important for my husband and I na marunong sila mag-Tagalog.”

“Another thing here is I’ve been given more opportunities as a producer, kasi yun naman talaga yung pinag-aralan ko.

“I am a late bloomer. I only went back to school nung may anak na ako.

"I had a two-year-old daughter, I was five months pregnant and I went back to college na meron na akong mga anak.

“Kasi kung nasa bahay lang ako, talagang maloloka ako, so I made school an outlet for me. Kinarir ko talaga siya.”

Speaking of her kids, payag naman kaya siyang pumasok ang kanilang mga anak na sina Kenovi at Sakura sa showbiz?

“Alam mo, they just finished a play. They did Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory on stage.

“So my daughter seems to like it, she loves performing, but my son is very shy.

“So, it’s up to them,” sabi ni G.

FULL SUPPORT.

Saad niya, “I’ve known Radha since my first show twenty years ago and she hasn’t changed.

“She’s still beautiful and vibrant.

“Yes, people are talking about her weight but the fact that she is comfortable talking about it says a lot about her.

“It shows that she’s a real person.

"Kasi kung makikinig ka nang makikinig sa mga tao, ‘Ay ganito, ay ganyan,’ you won’t be able to achieve what you want to do in your life.

“Kaya, naku, gusto ko siyang manalo. Team Radha ako—team Radha-Lea.”
