Jasmine Curtis Smith on finally being recognized for her talent: “People have seen my talent for what it is, not anymore, ’Jasmine, Anne Curtis’ little sister’—and that’s all because of Transit. Aminado si Jasmine Curtis Smith na in high spirits pa rin siya mula noong manalo bilang Best Supporting Actress (New Breed Category) sa nakaraang 2013 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival noong Agosto para sa indie movie na Transit.

“I’m still very much floating sa kaligayahan because of my successes this year,” masayang kuwento ng 19-year-old actress sa panayam ng PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) kahapon, September 20, sa Cinema 10 ng Gateway. Araneta Center.

“There were so many projects—two movies and I did Undercover for TV5—and all the endorsements that I did.

“After all these projects that I have done, so many people are interested in me and they’re finally recognizing the skills that I have and I’m trying to work on and improve on.

“So, nakakatuwa talaga.”

OSCAR ENTRY. Inilabas na ng Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) noong September 17 ang kanilang official statement na ang pelikulang Transit ang Philippine entry sa darating na Oscar Awards.

Tinalo nito ang iba pang mga pelikula tulad ng Thy Womb, On The Job, Dance of the Steel Bars at ang Tiktik: The Aswang Chronicles.

Ano ang pakiramdam ni Jasmine tungkol dito?

“Wow, we’re all overwhelmed,” bulalas niya. “It’s been a few days [since the announcement] and it hasn’t... di pa pumapasok sa ulo ko.

“I hope it can be nominated. It has gone a long way and let’s just hope for more.

“Yeah, I’m very happy.”

Sabi pa niya, “I just think it’s crazy.

“For Transit to go that far, I think it’s incredible.

“It’s one of the two films that I have done this year and it was like a part of my launching of me as ’on my own’ and not the shadow of... anymore.”

COMING INTO HER OWN. Kumbaga, unti-unti na niyang nabubura ang tag na “just the little sister of Anne Curtis.”

Natatawang reaksiyon ng TV5 contract star, “Good naman. People have seen my talent for what it is, not anymore ’Jasmine, Anne Curtis’ little sister’—and that’s all because of Transit.

“It helped so much in being recognized and for people to give me their attention. Although, yung being ’the little sister’ also helped me so much.

“Now, I’m happy na i can prove I can be on my own—that Ate is a different person and a different artist.

“Masaya ako na unti-unti na akong nakaka-fly on my own.”

Halatang walang “sibling rivalry” sa kanilang dalawa dahil sa pag-respeto nila sa isa’t isa bilang magkapatid.

“No naman,” aniya. “’Coz w’ere in such different paths.

“I mean, she’s so established already and a much mature woman in the image that she’s portraying.

“Wala. From the way we began [as actresses], we’re so different.

“Although you can compare our personalities or the way we dress—there’s so many things to compare—but I don’t think that it’s anything that I should be bothered about.

“Kasi, kahit hindi naman magkapatid ay pinagkukumpara, di ba?

“It’s a good thing to be compared to my Ate so they can also see the differences.”

Excited na kuwento ni Jasmine, “Actually, she didn’t know about this until I texted her.

“Nagulat siya and she’s very happy.

“She thinks na deserving ang movie for all the glories it’s getting now.

“We’re so happy pero no tears. Sabi niya, ’Ha?’ Happy siya na hindi makapaniwala.”

SAM CONCEPCION.

“But he’s very supportive and so happy for me.

“He’s very proud with all the projects I made in such a short time.

“Yun nga, sabi niya, almost three years pa lang daw ako sa showbiz but I have achieved na so much.”

DARK, EDGY ROLE. Sino siya sa pelikulang Puti?

Kuwento niya, “Ang role ko dito ay si Nika, an apprentice of Ian Veneracion who is a painter.

“Basically, I’m a student trying to learn from him and at the same time I take care of him and his son after a car accident.

“It’s a story that’s more on the dark and edgy side.”

Ano ang pinakamahirap na eksenang nagawa niya for this movie?

Pagbabalik-tanaw ng award-winning actress, “Yung lips ko, nakatahi po.

“So, we had prosthetics for that at hindi kailangang galawin yung lips ko and I couldn’t even drink at the time na sinu-shoot ito.

“Tapos, I had to cry pa. So, how can i cry without moving my lips?

“It was really difficult. But they [the production people] were very patient naman with me.

“They have been very supportive of me.”

“Oh, very different,” mabilis niyang tugon. “The fact na yung Transit is more of a dramatic film, this one is something like a suspense thriller/psycho thing.

“This one is also story-telling, but a little bit abstract.

“You really have to think of the message that it’s conveying and it’s a poem that you should try to understand kasi ginawan ng hidden meaning yung actual na story,” pagwawakas niyang tugon.
