Jasmine Curtis Smith sets own path to stardom; says she and sister Anne have different career focus

Jasmine Curtis Smith explains she and sister Anne Curtis have different interests: “Matagal na niyang gustong i-push through ang singing career. Ako talaga, dancing.”

Jasmine Curtis Smith is challenged to do more after bagging the Best Supporting Actress award from Cinemalaya for her role in Transit, not to mention being called a "Highly Acclaimed Actress" by her home network, TV5.

“Definitely not the singing,” natatawa niyang sabi. “I will leave that to my sister.

“But of course, sa mga mall shows, sa mga events, I will do that kasi part naman yun ng job ko.

“But in terms of kung ano ang focus ko, I would say, I want to be everything because I want to be a well-rounded person.

“I’m okay to sing naman, but hindi lang ako gagawa ng album or Annebisyosa.

Sagot naman ni Jasmine, “You know, people have their own opinion, and it takes Ate so long to where she is now, and to have the skills she has now.

“Ako kasi, yung advantage ko, nandoon siya to guide me.

“Marami akong nakatrabaho na already at the top, at tinulungan talaga ako.

“Pero noong siya, nineteen pa lang, she didn’t have that advantage. So magkaiba talaga kami ng journey ni Ate, in terms of our careers.

“So I wouldn’t say na mas magaling ako kay Ate, kasi I still need to keep on attending workshops or learning from other actors who have been in the industry longer than I.

“But okey if they say that, thank you.”

“HIGHLY ACCLAIMED ACTRESS.”

“[I’m] making sure I get to repay TV5 sa love na ibinibigay nila sa akin, even though I’m so active on Internet.”

“And I’ve learned to be more aggressive talaga sa trabaho, kaya they are now giving me the title na ‘Highly Acclaimed Actress.’”

SHOWBIZ AND STUDIES.

Makakaya ba niya itong pagsabayin?

Aniya, “Well, studies, you know, yun na nga, even this year, biglaan ang naging magandang pag-accept ng mga tao sa Transit.

“Napunta siya sa Oscars. Hopefully successful, and it will reach the Oscars.

“Kung mangyari yun, worth it yung tiring-day workload.

“It’s not that we’re rushing na makatapos, kasi so many actors and actresses have been talking to me about na sila rin naman…

“Six years, seven years, they finished college and, in time, they were still able to work.

“So I’m taking advice from people who have done it before, para may guide rin ako kung saan ako lulugar in terms of studying and working.

“Other than that, of course, I’m still very active rin naman in terms of learning."

SISTER ANNE’S ISSUE.

Inamin na ito ni Anne—"Most of it is true"—sa kanyang Instagram posts noong araw ding iyon.

Mabilis na sagot naman ni Jasmine, “She’s professional, she’s in Abu Dhabi.

“Meron siyang Annebisyosa concert doon. We could see that she’s moving on from whatever happens.

“She’s just trying to stay positive amidst all these that are happening.”

“I was there for her. Of course, I watched movies with her, dinner at home… simple lang, just to make her happy.”

Sabi ni Jasmine, “Well, of course, it affected her deeply.

For a while, she became quiet.

“Kasi ayaw na niyang palakihin pa ang isyu, and even I, I don’t want to make the issue bigger than what it is because hindi ko naman yun isyu.

“I wasn’t there, hindi ko alam ang details, so I cannot comment on anything and I cannot share my opinion, kasi sa amin na yun ni Ate.”

UNAFFECTED.

Giit niya, “No, no, I’ve always been that way naman, I know how to go about things.

“Hindi naman kasi porke’t celebrity ka, kailangan you behave a certain way.

“But you have to know your limits din naman, of course—it’s a lesson learned for everyone.

“Not just for my Ate, but for all the people who are involved—that we are just human.”

Dugtong din niya, “Ate wants to forget it also. Lalaki pa ‘yan and blown out of proportion.

“Right now, weeks later, it’s actually dying down, hindi ko naman talaga business yun at wala akong right, it’s not my responsibility to speak on her behalf.”

LOOKING BACK AND FORWARD.

“Ako, with my family, my Mom’s coming down with my brother, my Ate. After Christmas day, I think, would be flying out to Canada.

“But New Year, wala pa rin plano, hindi pa rin namin alam ni Mama. Probably, sa may beach or something.”

Kumusta ang 2013 niya, naging maganda ba?

Sambit ni Jasmine, “Career wise, yes. Personal life, yes.

“Everything has been so fruitful this year… I had all the support that I needed.

“I had all the love that I needed when I needed it the most, and even when I didn’t need it, nandiyan pa rin sila.”
