Banana Nite director Edgar “Bobot” Mortiz admitted it was a mistake to pull a prank on ABS-CBN actor Xian Lim during the live episode of Banana Nite last January 30.
Xian drew flak from netizens for poking fun at the Kim Chiu impersonator who appeared on stage and caught the Bride For Rent actor off guard.
The actor was a guest during the comedy gag show’s live airing from Plaza Sta. Cruz Church, Binondo, on Thursday night.
After singing “So It’s You,” the girl impersonator got up on stage causing a confused Xian to blurt out: “Ano’ng ginagawa ni Bea Binene dito?”
Xian raised the hackles of Netizens who took to Twitter and other social networking sites to berate the actor for what they perceive as his insensitive remark.
Xian apologized for his actions via his personal Twitter account at around 2 a.m., January 31.
The actor said, “It was not my intention, and I take full responsibility for my actions.”
He added, “I deeply apologize if I caused negative feelings while singing on stage during Chinese New Year’s Eve countdown…”
DIREK BOBOT. At the comedy show’s press conference last Thursday night, February 6, held at ABS-CBN’s Dolphy Theater, Xian Lim’s Banana Nite incident was the main agenda.
Immediately, Direk Bobot took the microphone to face media.
The 59 year-old actor/TV director said, “Sa totoo niyan, may kasalanan din kami, ’no?
“Hindi kasalanan ni Xian yung nangyari.
“Kasi, in fairness, biglaan talaga yung show na yun! Wala pa yatang isang linggo nung itinayo namin yun…”
Direk Bobot said it was initially his idea to set up Xian, and that he failed to brief the young actor before executing his scheme.
“Ako nakaisip na gugudtaymin [good time] si Xian. Actually, hindi niya alam na darating na kami nun.
“Ang problema lang, hindi siya na-brief… Habang kumakanta si Xian, nilapitan siya ni… yung lookalike ni ano [Kim Chiu].
“So, ang nangyari, nakatayo lang siya. So, walang nakakaalam nung mangyayari.
“So, may kasalanan din ako na hindi dapat ganun yung nangyari…”
Direk Bobot also said that they also overlooked giving instructions to the Kim Chiu impersonator.
“Siguro nagulat din si Xian dun sa nangyari. So, hindi naman kasalanan talaga ni Xian yung nangyari.
“May pagkukulang din naman ako.
“Ang gusto namin mangyari, masorpresa siya. So, parang miscommunication yung nangyari.”
DIRECTOR FRASCO MORTIZ. On February 2, the other Banana Nite director, Frasco Mortiz, Direk Bobot’s son, also aired his side regarding Xian Lim’s blunder.
A portion of the director’s tweet read:
“...on our part, it was a gimmick for Xian’s song number, we wanted to surprise him with Kim’s Kalokalike. Xian’s reaction wasn’t scripted...”
