Regine Velasquez stays away from songs dedicated to Mang Gerry: "I don’t think I will be able to sing it properly."

Regine Velasquez on her late father, Mang Gerry: “I imagine him now na, you know, he’s happy, he’s handsome, straight yung back, at may ngipin siya, most of all. Baka nga kumakain ng chicharon yun doon, e! Favorite niya yun, e, for sure!”

Siya ay 76 years old.

“Right now kasi, I’m trying to stay away from the songs na medyo nai-attach ko sa kanya, yung mga idine-dedicate ko sa kanya.

“Kasi, I don’t think I will be able to sing it properly.

“So, I’m trying to stay away from mga ‘Papa Can You Hear Me?’ and ‘Leader of the Band’ songs.

“Siguro for a while, hindi ko muna kaya.

“But we are preparing a number for him.”

For the longest time, that was his wish.

“And they had [Mang Gerry and Nate] a little bit of time together.

“And I took picture. And magkamukha silang mag-lolo, pati yung hair… nakakatawa.

“So Nate will always be... parang reminder of my Papa.”

WHAT MAKES REGINE SMILE?

“You know, I think the whole family is coping because God gave us a little bit of time to prepare.

“Last year, we thought he’s gonna leave us na.

“Yun yung prayer ko na, ‘God, I’m not ready.’ So, binigyan naman Niya kami ng time.

“And this year, talagang time na.

"He’s tired na rin, e.

“Now, I imagine him in Heaven, straight yung kanyang likod.

“Kasi, ‘di ba, may scoliosis si Papa? I never saw him with a straight back.

“I imagine him now na, you know, he’s happy, he’s handsome, straight yung back, at may ngipin siya, most of all.

“Baka nga kumakain ng chicharon yun doon, e!

"Favorite niya yun, e, for sure!” biro pa ni Regine tungkol sa kanyang namayapang ama.

Dagdag niya, “So, that makes me smile.

But we’re taking care of my mom.

“So, I think he’s really happy now in heaven.

"And, of course, my family, my husband [Ogie Alcasid], my Bubu Bear [Nate] make me smile all the time."

OGIE’S SUPPORT.

Saad ni Regine, “He’s with me all the time, last year pa lang nung ma-hospitalize yung papa ko.

“Kahit busy siya, he makes it a point na pag tumawag ako, sagot agad.

“Kasi when you’re going through something like this, your partner will be there to listen to you… to hold you.
