Vince Velasco not afraid of being typecast in gay roles after successful debut in My Husband’s Lover

Newcomer Vince Velasco on reprising gay role in My Husband’s Lover: “I really don’t mind doing it again. It was a big challenge for me, lalo na at nagsisimula pa lang ako sa pag-arte. But if there are other roles na babagay sa akin, I am willing to take the challenge.”

He portrayed the gay character Mike.

GAY ROLE.

“At first, parang ang hirap tanggapin agad yung role, it’s not an ordinary role kasi.

"And being new in this business, kapag nasimulan mo nang gumanap as gay, baka ma-typecast ka.

“It took a lot of thinking on my part. There’s a part of me na tumatanggi.

"But there’s a part of me saying na baka pagsisihan ko kung hindi ko gagawin.

“So I made a decision and I accepted the role.

"Ang nakakatuwa, my family and friends were all very supportive, especially my dad.

"He told me that I am old enough to do what I want. He trusts my decisions in life.

"I remember him telling me, ‘Make me proud!’

“As for my grandparents, I called them up to say that I accepted this role in a teleserye.

"I was surprised when they said that I should do the things that would make me happy.

“Tama nga sila. Being an actor makes me happy and I am proud to have worked with the best people in this business,” kuwento pa ni Vince nang makapanayam siya ng PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) sa GMA Network Center noong May 29.

NOT AFRAID TO BE TYPECAST.

“I really don’t mind doing it again.

“It was a big challenge for me, lalo na at nagsisimula pa lang ako sa pag-arte.

“But if there are other roles na babagay sa akin, I am willing to take the challenge.

“As an actor, I should be able to portray any role.

"Bida, kontrabida, gay... anything na puwede kong pag-aralan na gampanan,” ngiti pa ng 23-year-old Interdisciplinary Studies graduate ng Ateneo de Manila University.

Bata pa lang daw si Vince ay na-expose na siya sa mundo ng entertainment. Bukod sa pagiging sikat na sports newscaster ang kanyang ama, isang commercial model naman ang kanyang ina.

“I would sometimes tag along with both of them sa trabaho nila.

“With dad, I used to go to the studios with him to watch him work.

"Gano’n din sa mom ko. When she has a commercial shoot, sinasama niya ako.

“I guess that’s where it all started that’s why I’m in this business today.

“I thought about being like my dad pero walang ibang puwedeng pumalit sa husay niya, e.

"I don’t want to compete with him kasi that’s what he’s really good at.

“I also thought of being a professional basketball player. Back in Ateneo, I was active in basketball and swimming.

“I did a lot of things and I am always trying to find myself in all that.

“Until this acting job came along. Dito na ako naging kumportable.

"I guess this is my calling—to be in showbiz,” pahayag niya.

STARTING YOUNG.

Sabi niya, “I was like 10 years old pa lang when ABS-CBN asked my parents kung puwede akong maging artista.

"They didn’t allow me kasi masyado pa akong bata.

“Noong maging teenager ako, around 14 or 15 years old, they offered again.

"But I wasn’t really interested in showbiz then. I wanted to finish my studies.

“It was GMA-7 who first offered me a role in television. And I finally grabbed that opportunity.

"I felt at that time, ready na ako.”

“And they have great plans for me kaya I signed up with GMA Artist Center.

“I’ve been attending a series of acting workshops. They are preparing us for future roles in various teleseryes.

“Right now, I am shooting a movie with Aljur Abrenica and Alden Richards. It’s Cain at Abel under the direction of Adolfo Alix Jr.”

PHYSICALLY FIT.

“I do sports and I work out a lot. Kailangan ready tayo just in case may mga projects na kailangan shirtless tayo. At least, hindi nakakahiya, ‘di ba?” tawa pa ni Vince.

Ready na kaya si Vince na mas maging daring pa siya sa kanyang mga future projects?

“It depends on the job. If it’s about acting, I am open to any role.

“I want to keep on learning. It’s one thing I’ve learned from the people I’ve worked with.

“You can sense their dedication sa trabaho nila. Buhay na nila itong career nila sa showbiz kaya maingat sila at minamahal nila ito.

“I also want that kind of discipline and I am hoping to make a name for myself as an actor,” saad niya.

NOT ALL THE WAY. How far will Vince go to show off his well-toned physique?

“It all depends on what they want to see!” tawa pa niya.

“Pero depende naman ‘yan sa project.

"If it’s something that can help me grow as actor and move forward in the business, bakit ko naman hindi gagawin?

“But I will not just strip or show my behind or kiss another man without knowing what the project is all about.

“Nasa maayos na pag-uusap naman ‘yan, e.

“But of course, may mga kinu-consider din ako bago ko gawin ang mga ganyan.

“Nandiyan pa rin ang family ko and their approval means a lot to me.

“Kahit na nasa tamang edad na ako to do the things I want for myself, I still want to consult my family because they are a part of who I am right now.

“A thumbs-up from them means so much to me. Kaya kasama sila sa mga decision-making ko in my career,” pagmamalaki pa ni Vince.
