Mananatiling mayor ng lungsod ng Maynila si former President Joseph "Erap" Estrada matapos ibasura ng Supreme Court (SC) ang disqualification case na isinampa laban dito.
Ayon sa spokesperson ng Supreme Court na si Theodore Te, sa press briefing nito ngayong araw, January 21, nakakuha ng 11 boto mula sa mga hukom ng SC ang tuluyang pagbasura ng petisyong isinampa ni Alicia Vidal, abugado ni dating Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, ang mahigpit na nakalaban ni Erap noong 2013 elections.
Ang mga bumuto upang ibasura ang naturang disqualification case ay sina Justices Teresita Leonardo-De Castro, Presbitero Velasco Jr., Arturo Brion, Diosdado Peralta, Lucas Bersamin, Mariano del Castillo, Martin Villarama Jr., Jose Perez, Jose Mendoza, Bienvenido Reyes, at Estela Perlas-Bernabe.
Tatlo naman ang bumoto upang paburan ang petisyon laban sa kasalukuyang mayor ng Maynila—sina Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, Justices Antonio Carpio, at Marvic Mario Victor Leonen.
Ayon sa ulat ng GMA News Online, ang naging reklamo ng kampo ni Lim ay hindi raw karapat-dapat pang tumakbo si Estrada sa anumang puwesto ng gobyerno dahil nakulong na ito noon sa kasong plunder.
Pero ayon kay Te, isinaalang-alang ng mga Hukom ang Presidential Pardon na ibinigay kay Erap ni dating Pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo noong 2007.
Dagdag niya, "The majority characterized the pardon extended by Mrs. Arroyo to Mr. Estrada as absolute, thereby restoring Mr. Estrada's qualifications to stand as candidate in the last Mayoralty elections.”
Sa pagtanggap daw ni Mayor Erap ng naturang absolute pardon, kasabay nito ang pagpapanumbalik ng kanyang karapatan, kasama na ang pagtakbo sa anumang halalan batay na rin sa nakasaad sa Section 40 ng Local Government Code na may kahalintulad ding probisyong nakasaad sa Section 12 ng Omnibus Election Code.
JUBILANT ERAP. Sa panayam kay Erap sa Balitanghali ng GMA News TV, inihayag nito ang kanyang labis na kasiyahan sa desisyon ng Supreme Court.
Saad niya, "Siyempre masayang-masaya ako at gusto kong magpasalamat... na ang desisyon ay naayon sa naging pardon sa akin ni dating Pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
"Na malinaw na malinaw naman na restoring all my civil and politicial rights. Malinaw na malinaw, e.
“Kaya ako ay nagpapasalamat sa ating mga Supreme Court Justices.”
Sa official Facebook account nito, nakasaad ang mga salitang "THE SC HAS SPOKEN - ERAP STAYS!"
Dagdag pa sa ulat, labis ding ikinatuwa ng mga anak ni Erap na sina Senator JV Ejercito at Senator Jinggoy Estrada ang naturang desisyon ng Supreme Court.
Ayon kay Senator JV, “I am happy that the SC gave the importance to the voice of the people. They respected the mandate that was given as duly elected Mayor of Manila.”
Ayon naman sa statement ni Senator Jinggoy, na kasalukuyang naka-detain sa PNP Custodial Center sa Camp Crame, "The decision... is a triumph of the will of the Filipino masses especially the electorate of the City of Manila to choose their rightful leader.
"We know that this petition filed against my father by a losing opponent was merely a ploy to derail his plans of transforming Manila into a dynamic and progressive metropolis, which my father is now doing.
"I hope that the recent decision of the highest court of the land puts to final rest all questions and uncertainties over the pardon given to my father President Mayor Joseph Estrada and his eligibility to run for public office."
