Martin Diño withdraws bid for presidency; names Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte as substitute

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has repeatedly stated that he's not interested to run as president, but there has been a persistent clamor from his supporters for him to join the presidential race in 2016 elections.

PDP-Laban standard bearer Martin Diño has decided to withdraw his candidacy for presidency in the 2016 elections.

Diño named Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte as substitute presidential candidate for PDP-Laban.

Last Tuesday, October 27, PDP Laban passed a resolution naming Mayor Duterte as substitute candidate in the event that Dino backs out from the presidential race.

As it is, Diño is currently facing a disqualification complaint filed by the legal department of the Commission on Elections (Comelec), claiming that he is a nuisance candidate.

"May pinadala sa akin ang legal department ng Comelec na motu propio na dini-declare na ako'y nuisance candidate," said Diño in an interview with GMA News Online.

The Quezon City barangay captain and father of actress Liza Diño also confirmed that it's the reason why he decided to quit from the presidencial race.

Meanwhile, it is still unclear whether or not Mayor Duterte has formally agreed to become PDP-Laban's new standard bearer for the 2016 elections.

While Mayor Duterte has repeatedly stated that he's not interested to run as president, there has been a persistent clamor from his supporters for him to join the presidential race.
