ALDUB leads in numbers that matter in 2015

The AlDub love team composed of Alden Richard and Maine Mendoza (aka Yaya Dub) set unprecedented records far and beyond the entertainment universe this year.

El Gamma Penumbra became the first winner of the Asia's Got Talent, while Pia Wurtzbach the third Miss Universe crown for the Philippines.


Before we say goodbye to the old year, we look back at the numbers that made the Philippines big news in 2015.

The phenomenal AlDub love team composed of Alden Richard and Maine Mendoza (aka Yaya Dub) is clearly the most significant newsmaker in the country in 2015, having set unprecedented records far and beyond the entertainment universe.

AlDub’s Tamang Panahon concert was aired uninterrupted by commercials for three hours and 30 minutes on Saturday, October 24. Fans thronged the concert, filling the Philippine Arena’s 55,000 seats. And the thousands more who didn’t have tickets waited outside the arena, hoping for even just a glimpse of Alden and Maine.

The show pulled a historic 50.8 percent rating for Eat Bulaga! to the chagrin of It’s Showtime, which garnered a mere 5.8 percent in the same time slot that same day.

Just as amazing, the hashtag,#ALDubEBTamangPanahon generated 39,522,300 tweets in 24 hours, beating the 35.6 million tweets for the Brazil vs. Germany World Cup game in 2014.

Their first movie, My Bebe Love, grossed 60,462,169 pesos last December 25, breaking Metro Manila Film Festival's opening day's box-office record, which was held by Vice Ganda, whose The Amazing Paybeyt Benjamin in 2014, earned 53 million pesos on the first day.

Overnight, Alden and Maine became the top stars of the country in the last quarter of 2015.

They are now the most sought-after product endorsers, with 19 combined endorsements so far: McDonald’s, Coke, O+, SKK MObile Phone, Belo Medical Group, Talk N’ Text, Tide, Hapee, 555, Yazz Viza, Technomarine, Downy, Rejoice, Bear Brand, Datu Puti, Bench, Boardwalk, Snowcaps, and Zonrox.

And their social media followers. as of December 31, have leap-frogged to 2.9 million for Maine's Twitter account and 2 million for her Instagram account; 2.8 million and 1.6 million for Alden's Twitter and Instagram accounts, respectively.

There were other successes in 2015.

After 42 years, the Philippines finally bags its third Miss Universe crown, thanks to Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.

We also made a record in Miss Earth when we won the title twice in a row, a first in the pageant’s 15-year history.

Angelia Ong, a Filipino-Chinese from Iloilo, was crowned Miss Earth 2015 in Vienna, Austria. She succeeded Jamie Herrel, a Filipino-American from Cebu City who bagged the title for the Philippines in a pageant held here.

Ann Lorraine Colis, the Philippine representative from Pampanga, was crowned Miss Globe 2015 last October in Canada.

The 19-piece El Gamma Penumbra won the first season of Asia’s Got Talent last May. Gerphil Flores, also a Filipina, placed third.

Cyrus Villanueva won The X Factor Australia Season 6, making him the second Fil-Aussie (Marlisa Punzalan won Season 5) to win in the said reality music competition.

4th Impact, which was formerly 4th Power, made it to top 5 of The X Factor U.K.

The Philippines ranked sixth in this year’s SouthEast Asian Games, held last June in Singapore. The country’s 472 athletes took home 131 medals: 29 Gold, 36 Silver and 66 Bronze.

The country gave Pope Francis a rousing welcome during his five-day visit. Millions of Filipinos waited in the streets of Manila to catch a glimpse of the Catholic leader.

Six million people attended the outdoor Mass presided over by His Holiness at the Quirino Grandstand.

The country spent 10 billion pesos on year-long hosting of APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation).

2015 also brought sadness to the country.

A botched mission in Mamapasano in Maguindanaw led to the deaths of 44 Special Aaction Force operatives last January.

The operation was conducted to capture Malaysian terrorists hiding in the country.

The Typhoon Lando that hit parts of Luzon in October in Luzon killed 41 people and affected 268,877 families.

This was also the year when widespread cases of food poisoning filled the news. In July, as many as 350 elementary school students were food poisoned in Calamba, Laguna, alone.

The biggest news overseas was the terrorist attack in France, which led to the deaths of 129 people and many more injured. The attack was led by ISIS.

Controversies that made tongues wagging also marred 2015.

Some 20,000 members of the religious group Iglesia ni Cristo trooped to EDSA for five days last August, to protest the alleged meddling of the government on their “right to religion.” The rally caused massive traffic and brought much grief to the motoring public.

INC reportedly had expelled several members of its council. It was also accused of abducting and illegally detaining 10 of its ministers. The Department of Justice is on the case.

Vice President Jejomar Binay and his family are under a cloud most of the year owing to alleged overpricing of a parking building in Makati by 1.38 billion pesos. His son, Makati Mayor Junjun Binay, was suspended by the Ombudsman, along with 14 other Makati officials, on graft charges.

US Marine Lance Corporal Joseph Scott Pemberto was found guilty by the Olongapo Regional Trial Court for killing Filipina transgender Jennifer Laude in October 2014. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Jason Ivler was found guilty for killing a motorist in a road rage incident six years ago. He was sentenced to reclusion perpetua or 40 years in prison.

American singer Chris Brown was prevented from leaving the Philippines last July on allegations of fraud when he did not show up in a New year’s concert arranged by Iglesia ni Cristo. He was able to leave only after three days.
