John Arcilla on the late Wenn Deramas: "Siya yung naging icon ng comedy."

Yung era niya, talagang mahirap humanap pagkatapos nito," said John Arcilla when asked about box-office director Wenn Deramas's legacy in the entertainment industry.

Veteran actor John Arcilla (a.k.a. Heneral Luna) would always remember box-office director Wenn Deramas’s innate ability to find laughter in everything.

“Si Direk kasi sobrang komedyante.

“Kahit normal lang siyang nagsasalita, sobrang napapatawa niya ako nang sobra,” he said.

John further related how Direk Wenn chose to honor his mom by playing an April Boy Regino hit song during her burial in 2009.

“Like, halimbawa, nung inilibing ang nanay niya.

PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) was able to interview John at the wake of Direk Wenn in Arlington Memorial Chapels, Quezon City, last Tuesday night, March 1.

John stayed at the wake for several hours.

Apparently, they have worked together in several Kapamilya TV series; including Buttercup (2003) and Habang May Buhay (2010).

John was also part of the cast of the Vice Ganda-starrer Petrang Kabayo (2010).

DIREK WENN'S HUMBLE BEGINNINGS. Back in those days, Direk Wenn would share stories about how he worked his way up in the showbiz ladder—from working as a production assistant to becoming a box-office director.

John fondly recalled, “Tapos, naalala ko nung first siyang nagdirek.

“Sinabi niya kasi EP [executive producer] siya dati. From PA to writer to segment writer to EP.

“Tapos nawalan sila ng director. E, kailangan tapusin yung Calvento [Files episode] ata yun.

“Sabi ni Tita Cory Vidanes, ‘Paano ‘yan? Sino ang magdidirek?’

“Sabi niya [Wenn], ‘Eto sa harap niyo. Ako, ako ang magdidirek!’

“Ganun kadiretso. Ganun kalakas ang loob!”

But what never fails to amaze John is how Direk Wenn managed his time well even when he juggles directorial stints in movies and teleseryes.

“Hanggang 2 A.M. lang ako, 2 A.M. lang ako.

“Pero blockbuster! Ang galing, ang galing!”

BIG LOSS IN SHOWBIZ. During the interview with PEP, John belatedly realized that the last time he got the chance to talk to Direk Wenn was in 2014.

“Oh my god!

For John, the passing of Direk Wenn is definitely a big loss to the entertainment industry.

“Yung era niya, talagang mahirap humanap pagkatapos nito.

“Kasi napakarami ng pinalaki niyang artista at pinalaking komedyante dahil sa original ideas niya.”
