Mariz Umali not expecting an apology from president-elect Rodrigo Duterte

Mariz Umali on incoming president Rodrigo Duterte's catcalling her: "It may have been improper for a president-elect but, of course, we will continue to do our job and we are not expecting any apology from him personally."

GMA News anchor and reporter Mariz Umali does not expect an apology from president-elect Rodrigo Duterte after catcalling her at a press conference last Tuesday, May 31, in Davao City.

In an interview with Kara David on News To Go Thurday morning, June 2, Mariz related that after the presser, no one from Duterte's group approached her to apologize for the incoming president's behavior.

“From their end, walang lumapit o nakipag-usap man lang.

“I'm not expecting any apology, pero wala man lang nakipag-usap from their end,” she said.

Mariz also said that she maintained her composure after Duterte's catcalling to get an answer to her question.

She added that she just tried to understand Digong based on the observation of fellow reporters who have been covering the Davao City mayor.

I tried to understand what the situation was and try to get my answer, which I did.

He created him that way.

“So, again, iniintindi natin.

“It may have been improper for a president-elect but, of course, we will continue to do our job and we are not expecting any apology from him personally.”

Mariz's husband, fellow GMA News anchor and reporter Raffy Tima, turned to Facebook yesterday, June 1, to criticize Duterte for catcalling his wife.

On his Facebook account, Raffy said that he expected such action from Mayor Duterte.

“I know his reputation well enough not to be shocked by it, but that does not make it right.

“For someone who espouses leadership by example, catcalling anyone in a press conference with all cameras trained on him defies logic.”
