ABS-CBN news anchor Karen Davila refuses to accept President-elect Rodrigo Duterte’s justification that some slain journalists deserve to be assassinated for being corrupt and biased.
Stalwart supporters of President-elect Duterte were quick to defend him, claiming that certain news organizations have been biased with their reportage.
But whether or not some news headlines were sensationalized, Karen reiterated that the media killings should not be taken lightly.
Nothing justifies the killing of journalists - even if media followed your suggested headline ????? https://t.co/xL6CXn070C— Karen Davila (@iamkarendavila) June 1, 2016
Haha! Good morning thank you ????? I value life but believe in justice. Yes, twitter too short ??? https://t.co/IgriMQXLX8— Karen Davila (@iamkarendavila) June 1, 2016
Karen also weighed in on the catcalling incident, when President-elect Duterte wolf-whistled at GMA News reporter Mariz Umali during the same May 31 Davao presscon.
Karen stressed in her DZMM radio show that catcalling is never a compliment to women.
Thank you @iamkarendavila for standing that catcalling is never a compliment. Watching you now @ DZMM. ???— Naval Sea (@chat_naval) June 2, 2016
She also retweeted the dismayed statement of Mariz’s husband and fellow GMA News reporter, Raffy Tima, about the incident.
Catcalling my wife is wrong in so many levels. https://t.co/hkeuvKv5qi— Raffy Tima (@raffytima) June 1, 2016
On the other hand, lifestyle host Daphne Oseña-Paez remarked about media’s supposed failure to highlight President-elect Duterte’s plan to cut down the red tape on government procedures.
At yesterday's press con, Duterte said SSS, GSIS & all govt procedures shd require only 5 signatures & done in 1month. No one reported that.— Daphne Oseña Paez (@DaphneOP) June 1, 2016
In a separate Twitter post, Daphne cited a report that says President-elect Duterte is all for "freedom of expression" but with "responsibility."
