Before closing the chapters of 2016, PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) looks back on newfound romances in the world of show business.
Who were the ones that you know would be an item? Who among them caught you by surprise?
Below are 16 real-life couples that gave us lots of kilig feels:
1. James Reid and Nadine Lustre
From reel to real, James Reid and Nadine Lustre learned to never say never when it comes to falling in love with someone who’s not your type.
It took two years of friendship and mutual respect before the two realized that they have feelings for each other.
“Actually, it’s true. Sinabi ko din sa kanya hindi ko siya type,” said Nadine in the February TV special for On The Wings of Love, their hit teleserye on ABS-CBN.
For his part, James said that it was after he and Nadine overcame a “silent war” in November 2015 that brought them closer and made him see her in a different light.
“With Nadine, because I never liked her before, and I never imagined us getting together ever in the future.
“I was completely weird with her, silly, and I pick my nose in front of her like I would with a best friend, like anyone with a best friend, no one else.
“And I realized, 'Wow, I’m completely myself when I am with her, and I don’t have to try to be anyone else!'
“It made falling in love with her so easy.”
The two became a couple on February 11, 2016.
James made it public when he declared his love for Nadine on February 20, the night of On The Wings of Love concert at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
2. Luis Manzano and Jessy Mendiola
“Oo,” was Jessy Mendiola’s kilig response when Luis Manzano unexpectedly asked her if she loves him during the actress' guest appearance on Family Feud's December 11 episode.
This confession from Jessy coupled with Luis’s sweet gestures towards her were perceived as clear signs that the two are now in a relationship.
On Jessy’s 23rd birthday last December 3, Luis declared via Instagram that he will always be there for her through highs and lows. He added that life is good “as long as I’ve got your hand in mine.”
The two grew close ever since Luis reportedly came to Jessy’s rescue in the London flight incident involving Enrique Gil, back in September 2015.
But according to Jessy, it was only sometime in May this year that Luis started courting her.
She had dismissed rumors linking her to the breakup of Angel and Luis in February 2016.
3. Aljur Abrenica and Kylie Padilla
Love is lovelier the second time around for Kylie Padilla and Aljur Abrenica who were embroiled in a controversial breakup back in 2014.
In an exclusive interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal), Aljur revealed that he and Kylie got back together September this year.
“Anuman ang mga nangyari dati, mga bata pa tayo noon.
“Ngayon, I think mas nakakaintindi na tayo, handa na ako,” said Aljur, who claimed that his love for Kylie never went away.
Aljur also expressed his willingness to face Kylie's dad Robin Padilla, who was furious with the Kapuso actor for breaking up with his daughter.
“Normal ‘yan sa mga tatay to be always protective sa mga princesses nila. And I respect that kay Tito Robin.
“And I'm presenting myself again, na I have to take care of his daughter.”
4. Lovi Poe and Chris Johnson
Months after her breakup with Rocco Nacino, Lovi Poe surprised her Instagram followers when she started posting photos of a French guy named Chris Johnson.
According to Lovi, she already knew Chris for quite some time before they met again in St. Tropez last May.
Since then, the Kapuso actress has shared a lot of her travel photos with Chris.
“Every time you spend a lot of time with your partner, you get to know each other even more, especially when you’re in a foreign country.”
Although she’s yet to admit if they’re already a couple, Lovi said in a PEPtalk interview that she’s now “so chill” when it comes to handling a relationship.
5. KC Concepcion and Aly Borromeo
In an April interview, KC Concepcion admitted that she and Philippine Azkals’ team captain Aly Borromeo are dating.
She described Aly as one of the “few good guys left.”
Since then, they have been openly exchanging messages on their respective social media accounts.
They even shared snapshots of their sweet escapades in Hong Kong, Paris, and Australia.
Although KC has yet to confirm that she and Ali are a couple, she had notably brought him in a number of family gatherings already.
Her mom Sharon Cuneta was even vocal in saying that she approves of Ali because he “makes my daughter a better person and brings her closer to the family.”
6. Bea Alonzo and Gerald Anderson
Six years after their short-lived romance, Bea Alonzo and Gerald Anderson had the chance to start all over again.
They were able to revive their closeness after working together in Star Cinema’s How To Be Yours last July.
By September, Bea admitted that she and Gerald have been spending time together.
She said, “Hindi naman kami nagtatago.
“We go out. Wala namang masama. Parang wala naman kaming nasasaktan.”
Just this month, Gerald was seen getting along really well with Bea’s family during a dinner party held at the latter’s Quezon City home.
And from the looks of it, it's only a matter of time before they go public about their rumored relationship.
7. Julie Ann San Jose and Benjamin Alves
After months of speculations, Julie Ann San Jose confirmed that she and Benjamin Alves are “exclusively dating.”
She gave this statement in an exclusive interview with GMA News Online last November 22.
In an earlier interview with PEP, Julie Anne said that she and Ben have a lot of shared interests.
She added, “Importante sa akin ay gusto siya ng parents ko.
“They like him right away kasi hindi lang daw siya guwapo kundi mabait at edukado pa.”
For his part, Benjamin said that his family in Guam also knows about his growing romance with Julie Anne.
“I share pictures with them a lot, so alam naman nila yung nangyayari with me and Julie.
“They get to communicate naman, so we’re good,” the Kapuso actor was quoted in a September 4 PEP report.
8. Alex Gonzaga and Mikee Morada
“Not a third or fifth wheel anymore.”
This was Alex Gonzaga’s caption in an Instagram post where she was seen with a non-showbiz guy named Mikee Morada.
The Kapamilya star has refrained from calling Mikee by his name in the few photos of him that she shared to the public.
But according to a PEP source, they were spotted at a pancake diner in Bonifacio Global City looking “very sweet” to each other.
Alex also brought Mikee to a family-members-only dinner party attended by the Gonzagas and Sorianos last November.
9. Andi Eigenmann and Emilio Arambulo
As early as November 2015, Andi Eigenmann admitted to PEP that she’s dating a non-showbiz guy who completely gets her kind of “crazy.”
She elaborated, "Magkasundo kami in the shallow sense but we can connect also in a deep level, something I thought I would never find again."
Then on November 3, 2016, Andi revealed through her Facebook post that she and her non-showbiz boyfriend Emilio Arambulo are celebrating their first anniversary as a couple.
“You pulled me into your peace. Here's to more endless summers with you. Maligayang annibersaryo. #YoAndi”
10. Sam Milby and Mari Jasmine
Their love story started when Sam Milby followed Mari Jasmine on Twitter last year.
Sam kept their budding romance under wraps by evading queries about the mystery girl that he had been dating since the latter part of 2015.
However, PEP spotted Mari at Sam’s 10th anniversary concert at Kia Theater on November 28, 2015.
The fact that Mari was seen lounging at the backstage dressing room, where Sam’s parents were also waiting, was a telling sign that the Japanese-English model is special to the Rockoustic Heartthrob.
It was only sometime in July 2016 when Sam finally confirmed that he and Mari are in a relationship.
11. Sunshine Cruz and Macky Mathay
September 18, 2016 was the day Sunshine Cruz said "yes" to being the girlfriend of Macky Mathay, Ara Mina’s younger half-brother.
In an exclusive interview with PEP, Macky revealed that their romance started with a simple “Hi!” from him when he approached Sunshine via Instagram direct messaging.
He added that it didn’t take long for them to fall for each other.
“Sabi ko, ‘I can wait, I can wait.’
“But still, I decided to tell her that I love her, kasi mahal ko na siya, e.
“Ayoko namang maging hipokrito sa sarili ko. Kasi, hindi na kami bata.
“So, I told her that I love her.
“She actually said ‘I love you too’ after a week.”
12. Zsa Zsa Padilla and Conrad Onglao
Five months after calling off their engagement, Zsa Zsa Padilla and Conrad Onglao decided to give their relationship a second chance.
It was Zsa Zsa who confirmed that she has reconciled with Conrad, according to the October 2016 report of entertainment columnist Ricky Lo.
While the Divine Diva declined to give details about their reconciliation, she expressed hopes that it would be for keeps this time around.
Zsa Zsa also hinted that things are better between her and Conrad, who spent Christmas Eve with her and her daughters Zia and Nicole.
13. Pia Wurtzbach and Marlon Stockinger
Few months before her reign comes to an end, Miss Universe 2016 Pia Wurtzbach is constantly seen in the company of Filipino-Swiss racer Marlon Stockinger.
As seen in their respective Instagram feeds, the rumored couple have been constantly hanging out whether they are in New York or in Manila.
Back in October, Marlon confirmed that he and Pia are exclusively dating.
The racer added that as far as he knows, Pia's much-publicized relationship with the “Sexiest Dr. Alive” Dr. Dr. Mike Varshavski is over.
14. Geoff Eigenmann and Maya
January 31 was the day Geoff Eigenmann and Maya marked their first day as a couple.
But it took four months before the singer confirmed it in an interview with PEP.
Describing her relationship with Geoff, Maya said, “Parang matagal ko na siyang kilala.
“Parang yung feeling mo lang na tama, yung ganung feeling.
“Yung hindi mo pinipilit ang mga bagay-bagay, lahat lang siya, nagpu-fall into place.”
Although they prefer to keep their relationship “low-key,” Geoff would sometimes surprise Maya by “gatecrashing” an event just to watch her perform live onstage.
15. Louise delos Reyes and Champ Lui-Pio
Louise delos Reyes and Champ Lui-Pio kept their relationship low-profile since they started dating sometime in June last year.
But in a PEP report dated October 1, 2016, the Kapuso actress-blogger admitted that she and boyfriend Champ are going strong.
“I am much happy and this time I want to be private with my life.
“Since I started in showbiz, naha-highlight palagi yung 'someone' ko, kung sino ang boyfriend ko.
“Ngayon, parang mas gusto ko mas intimate siya, mas private, ayoko nang masyadong issue.”
16. Michael Pangilinan and Garrie Concepcion
Garrie Concepcion said that it was Michael Pangilinan’s affection for her family that made her fall for him.
She was also overwhelmed by the fact that the singer has always been vocal about his feelings for her from the start of their relationship.
“Nakakataba po ng puso na to know that someone is proud to be with you,” said Garrie, referring to Michael’s admission in a May 30 TV interview that they are in a relationship.
Garrie is Gabby Concepcion’s daughter to ex-partner Grace Ibuna.
Although she has yet to personally introduce Michael to her dad, Garrie said that her father has expressed a desire to meet her boyfriend soon.
For his part, Michael feels blessed that Garrie and her family accepts the fact that he has a love child.
“Kunyari ako yung babae, hindi ako maghahanap ng may anak, di ba? Kasi gusto ko, wala.
“Pero hindi, doon ko napatunayan na talagang hindi yung pangit yung tinitingnan sa 'yo, e. Kung anong merong puso ka ngayon.”
17. Barbie Forteza and Kiko Estrada
On June 11, 2016, Barbie Forteza confirmed that she and Kiko Estrada have been dating for three months.
She said in an interview with PEP, “Three months na kaming nagdi-date. Dating lang.”
The two grew close to each other on the set of the now-defunct GMA-7 primetime series That’s My Amboy.
But on August 24, less than three months after confirming their dating status, Barbie revealed that things did not work out between her and Kiko.
In a separate interview with PEP last November, Barbie maintained that it was not her fault that her growing romance with Kiko abruptly ended.
18. Aiko Melendez and Shahin Alimirzapour
Although they had a short-lived romance, Aiko Melendez and Shahin Alimirzapour once said that their 12-year age gap was never an issue between them.
“We just clicked so well,” said the Iranian businessman in an exclusive interview with PEP last April 19.
It was also in the same report that Aiko first confirmed that they are in a relationship.
The 40-year-old actress added, “He is the one who makes me smile and who made an effort to pursue me.”
But on September 13, almost five months after admitting their relationship, Aiko revealed that they are “taking a break.”
She later revealed that Shahin’s lack of effort to be close to her kids was the reason behind their breakup.
