Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 1982 Ma. Isabel Lopez on Miss Universe 2016 being held in the Philippines: "Siyempre funded ito ng private sector, siyempre kailangan may ROI [return of investment]. So, it sounds more like a business. Negosyo talaga na kinakailangan yung mga funding na 'to, they need to do a lot of activities. I would say, itong mga candidate, overworked."

Ngunit ayon sa veteran actress, “Alam naman natin na it’s not all the time that a woman gets to be in the Miss Universe pageant.

“I was just fortunate na nakatuntong ako doon, pero hindi ako sa nostalgia mood.

“Kasi, after all these years, I have learned the fact that the world is bigger than Araneta Coliseum.

“And the world is much bigger than the Miss Universe pageant and there’s always life after a beauty title.

“So, wala ako sa nostalgic mood.”

Patuloy ni Isabel, “I just say, ‘Been there, done that.’

“I have other endeavors kasi kaya hindi ako masyado yung Miss Universe fever.

“Kumbaga, isa lang ‘yan sa aspeto ng life ko, like, I have my art exhibit in the States.

“It’s my first time to do an art exhibit there, tapos I have a new film.

“I have other concerns in my life than just focus on the Miss Universe pageant.

“But, of course, I’m watching the Miss Universe pageant.”

Pahayag ni Isabel, “Now that I was just a spectator and watching it, I just think wala naman nabago sa mga Miss Universe in the past.

“Kaya lang, since sa Philippines ang Miss Universe is done by the private sector at walang finances o funding ang Philippine government, I just thought na overworked masyado yung mga candidate, kasi they have to go to so many fundraising events.

“These candidates are… parang it’s a form of… siyempre funded ito ng private sector, siyempre kailangan may ROI [return of investment].

“So, it sounds more like a business.

“Negosyo talaga na kinakailangan yung mga funding na ‘to, they need to do a lot of activities.

“I would say, itong mga candidate, overworked.

“Remember, these candidates want to represent the country, you’re not getting paid.

“Magpa-fashion show siya, but you’re not gonna get paid.

“Hindi kami masyadong hard sell na we have to do this show, we have to do that.

“It was more like the basic na courtesy call sa Palace, we have to do the rehearsals, we have to do like social functions.

“Pero hindi ibig sabihin mga gala na dinner shows na we have to do na alam mo naman na isang mesa, ibinebenta ng 50,000 [pesos].”

MISS UNIVERSE 1982.

Tugon niya, “Suportang ano? Suportang panglalait?

“Well, encouraging naman, kaya lang, just wearing an uneasy crown, alam mo yun?

“When I was a candidate kasi, my crown was so uneasy.

“Parang matutumba, ide-dethrone ka o tatanggalan ka anytime.

“So, it was like very difficult going through so many emotional, mental stress.”

Kuwento pa ni Isabel, “Stella [Marquez-Araneta, BPCI chairperson] was also out of the country, kaya napakahirap for somebody like me na mag-represent ng country.

“You carry so much burden.
