Piolo Pascual has been appointed as the new celebrity ambassador of Optical Media Board (OMB).

According to Republic Act 9239 or Optical Media Act of 2003, the OMB is mandated to “evaluate the qualifications of any individual, establishment or other entity to engage in the mastering, manufacture or replication of optical media.”

Piolo, for his part, said that he is determined to fight piracy in cinema, TV, and music.

He elaborated, “It’s a privilege. It’s an opportunity to exercise your celebrity status and use it for the right reasons.

“Yung mga ganitong cause, talagang ipinagpapasalamat ko kasi, you know, it’s an advocacy na walang bayad.

“Pero since you belong to the entertainment industry, so best foot forward.

“At the same time, however you can use your influence to spread the cause, di ba? Malaking karangalan sa akin yun bilang artista.”

PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) was able to interview Piolo at the presscon of his movie Northern Lights, held at ABS-CBN’s 9501 Restaurant in Quezon City, last night, March 1.

Without going into details, Piolo said that he’s aware of previous controversies that rocked OMB.

Asked if he can clear the name of the agency from previous intrigues, Piolo replied, “It’s not up to me.

“I’m just gonna do what I can as an ambassador, as an advocate of cinema.

“Nasa tao naman yun, e.

“I believe in what the agency stands for, which is anti-piracy for TV, music, and cinema. So, yun ang pinaka-battlecry.”

Piolo added that he will make an effort to attend the OMB-related activities lined up for him.

“Whatever program that I have, kung anong mga activities na puwede ako pumunta just to really create awareness.

“So, mag-uusap pa kami tungkol sa activities namin na mangyayari.”

Last year, former OMB Chairman Ronnie Ricketts was charged by the Office of the Ombudsman with a graft case for allegedly allowing the release of confiscated pirated DVDs and VCDs.

OMB is currently chaired by Atty. Anselmo Adriano.
