Former ABS-CBN news reporter and TV host Atom Araullo is back to being a Kapuso.
Today, September 21, the 34-year-old broadcast journalist was officially welcomed as the newest member of GMA News and Public Affairs.
He made his first appearance as a returning Kapuso on the network's primetime newscast 24 Oras.
Talking about his transfer from ABS-CBN to GMA-7, Atom said, "Sa larangan ng journalism, gusto ko pang matuto.
"At palagay ko, this is one of the best places to learn about journalism, so I'm really excited."
He continued, "Mahilig akong gumawa ng mga docu.
"Talagang alam ko naman na ang GMA, napakahusay sa paggawa ng mga documentaries."
He is joining veteran broadcast journalists Howie Severino, Kara David, Jay Taruc, and Sandra Aguinaldo in the GMA News and Public Affairs docu-program I-Witness.
Looking forward to being part of the team, Atom added, "Yung wealth of experience lang nila ay malaking bagay na."
Joining GMA News and Public Affairs was a homecoming for Atom, who hosted his own segment, "ATOMic Sports," on the Kapuso network's primetime news program, 24 Oras, in 2004.
In his teenage years, he was also a cast member of the ‘90s educational kiddie blocktimer 5 and Up, which aired on TV5 and then on GMA-7.
SIX-DAY GAP. Atom made his big career move six days after he announced that he was leaving ABS-CBN, his home network for 13 years.
On his last day as a Kapamilya last Friday, September 14, Atom did not discuss details of his decision to transfer to GMA-7, except to say that he wants to “explore emerging opportunities and challenges beyond the organization.”
But that same day, speculations about the ABS-CBN news reporter switching networks were already making the rounds online.
Netizens also speculated that Atom was the unnamed Kapamilya who was being welcomed as the newest Kapuso based on clues from GMA-7's Mike Enriquez and Arnold Clavio in their morning radio program on DZBB.
Atom remained tight-lipped even when a photo of him at the ground-floor lobby of GMA Network Center went viral over the weekend.
Yesterday, September 20, GMA News and Public Affairs posted on Facebook a teaser showing a "mystery man" driving a car headed to the GMA-7 headquarters.
In the teaser video, the man's face is partially seen in the car's rear view mirror. He is wearing the same blue shirt that Atom was seen in in his earlier viral photo.
Upon reaching his destination, a voice over is heard, saying, "You've arrived at your destination."
By then, netizens were convinced that Atom was indeed transferring to GMA-7.
NO BAD BLOOD. In his last appearance on Umagang Kay Ganda, Atom clarified that he had no bad blood with ABS-CBN management, and that his former bosses wished him well as he welcomed a new chapter in his career.
WELCOME KAPUSO. GMA Network President and CEO Felipe Gozon was the first to welcome Atom as a Kapuso.
Gozon said, "Dahil kilala ang GMA sa paggawa ng world-class at award-winning documentary and public affairs programs, kami ay nalulugod sa paglipat ni Atom Araullo para lalo siyang mahasa sa pagiging magaling na broadcast journalist at documentarist, among others."
