Kapuso actor Derrick Monasterio on posting an offensive AIDS joke via Instagram: "Nagkamali ako...

Derrick Monsterio was filled with remorse as he realized that it was “wrong, insensitive, and messed up” for him to joke about AIDS or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome.

This is in relation to his January 17 Instagram post showing what he thought was a “witty joke” about patients with AIDS staying “positive” in the face of their health condition.

The 22-year-old Kapuso actor said, “Na-realize ko na it’s not a laughing matter. Seryoso talagang nangyayari siya.

“Mali yung ginawa ko talaga. Hindi ako naging sensitive.”

NOT A JOKE. In an exclusive interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) last night, January 18, Derrick said that it belatedly dawned on him that joking about AIDS perpetuates unwarranted stigma against patients suffering from it.

“So, sabi ko, ‘A, okay, I messed up.’ Nagkamali ako dun sa ginawa ko."

Derrick admitted that he reposted the AIDS joke without thinking of the gravity of his actions.

Upon posting his joke about AIDS via Instagram story, Derrick related that netizens started calling him out for being way out of line.

The Kapuso actor then deleted his first post and issued via Instagram story an apology for his offensive joke.

Derrick reiterated that he certainly learned an important lesson.

“Na this is a serious matter, hindi ito dapat pinagtatawanan.”
