"Sana maintindihan niyo. Ayokong iwan 'to. Diyos ko, I love telling stories. But in order to make you happy, may dalawang anak akong napapabayaan, so I need to give my time to them," said Star Cinema's resident director Cathy Garcia-Molina, whose extended contract is set to end in August 2019.

Box-office director Cathy Garcia-Molina, 46, turned emotional while explaining her decision to retire from showbiz.

It was reinforced by her heart-to-heart talk with Star Cinema’s creative manager Carmi Raymundo while shooting the film My Perfect You, starring Gerald Anderson and Pia Wurtzbach.

"Tayo, pag stressed tayo, we want to go out, we want to take a vacation.

"So, siya, ginawa niya yun.

“But after a while, tumigil, ‘Okey, masaya na ako, so what’s next?’

"Then she realized she misses her family. ‘Kumusta na kaya yung family ko?’"

The director explained that it made her realize that it’s time for her to give time for her two children, aged 12 and 11 years old.

“You may have everything in life, puwede ka maging masaya sa lahat ng bagay, but if there’s no one to share it with, what is it for?

"That’s what I realized.

“Kaya lalo kong naisip, kailangan ko mag-retire.

"Kasi, what’s this success for if not for my children?

"And by giving you these movies and I am not with my children, I’d rather be with them."

Shedding tears, Cathy said it was a tough decision for her to make.

“Sana maintindihan niyo. Ayokong iwan ‘to. Diyos ko, I love telling stories.

"But in order to make you happy, may dalawang anak akong napapabayaan.

"So, I need to give my time to them.

“That’s how important this movie is to me.

"It made me realize all the more what’s the more important thing in life? Family.”

Cathy gave this statement during the digital media conference for My Perfect You, held at Omotenashi Japanese Restaurant, in Quezon City, earlier today, March 15.

EXTENDED CONTRACT. In a separate interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal), Cathy said that she originally wanted to retire from filmmaking when her contract with Star Cinema ended last year.

The Sharon Cuneta-Robin Padilla starrer Unexpectedly Yours was supposed to be her last film.

But Cathy extended her contract until August 2019.

During which time, she's slated to do a movie with Piolo Pascual, another one top-billed by Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla, and two other movies that have no casting just yet.

Cathy elaborated, “Kaya ako nag-stay dahil kay Direk Olive Lamasan.

"Dapat last year pa. Nag-renew lang ako para kay Inang."

Olivia Lamasan—whose moniker is Olive but is also fondly called in showbiz circles as Inang—has been appointed as the new managing director of Star Cinema in January 2018.

Olivia is now the head of ABS-CBN's film arm following the retirement of its chief content officer, Malou Santos.

This transition in the management of Star Cinema seems to be what prompted Cathy to stay a little bit longer.

Did her decision to quit showbiz happen overnight?

Cathy answered, “It’s not one day I woke up like that. Medyo matagal na ‘yan.

"Hindi naman alam ng lahat na biyuda ako."

Her husband, Engineer Philip Rey "Epoy" Molina, died in a bike accident in Baguio City in March 2009.

Talking about being a single parent, she continued, "Yung mga anak ko, nahihiya ako na hindi ko sila nakakasama. Bilang nanay, nakaka-guilty.

“But then again, alam niyo naman na eto lang naman ang ginagawa kong trabaho.

"So, kung hindi ko ito gagawin, wala kaming kakainin."

HAPPY LOVE LIFE. Apart from prioritizing her children’s needs, the box-office director said it just so happened that she has a boyfriend who supports her decision to quit showbiz.

“Hindi ko naman sinasara yung doors ko dito.

"It’s not like umaalis ako so I can have a chance to work outside, no.

“I really wanna stop.

"And then, nakakuha ako ng boyfriend who would want me to stop. Who would want me to stay in the house, 'tapos siya nagwu-work.

“So, parang nagkita-kita yung pagkakataon. Siguro nga eto yung panahon.”

Is she planning to get married anytime soon?

"Naku! Ang anak ko nga, pag pinakilala sa school, ‘This is my future daddy!’

"Tanggap naman ng anak ko."

Cathy has directed a total of 23 films, including the following box-office hits: You Are The One (2006), One More Chance (2007), A Very Special Love (2008), You Changed My Life (2009), Miss You Like Crazy (2010), My Amnesia Girl (2010), Unofficially Yours (2012), It Takes A Man and A Woman (2013), Four Sisters and A Wedding (2013), She's Dating The Gangster (2014), A Second Chance (2015), Just The 3 of Us (2016), and My Ex and Whys (2017).
