Award-winning Australian actress Nicole Kidman is deeply saddened by the passing of her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman.
Janella was 83.
On Saturday, September 7, 2024, Nicole had to forgo attending the Venice Film Festival awards ceremony, where she was recognized as Best Actress for her performance in Babygirl, to immediately return to Australia after learning of her mother's sudden passing.

The film's director, Halina Reijn, conveyed the heartbreaking news at the Venice Film Festival by reading a statement penned by Nicole.
"I arrived in Venice and found out shortly after that my beautiful, brave mother, Janelle Ann Kidman has just passed," Nicole said in her statement as per The Associated Press.
Her statement continued, "I'm in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her. She shaped me, she guided me and she made me.
"I am beyond grateful that I get to say her name to all of you through Halina.
"The collision of life and art is heartbreaking, and my heart is broken."
After sharing Nicole's heartfelt message with the audience in Venice, Reijn added warmly, "Nicole, we love you all."

No further details have been released about Janelle's passing. However, a representative of the Kidman family confirmed Janelle's death to PEOPLE, stating, "The family is heartbroken and asks for privacy at this time."
Nicole had a very close relationship with her mother, Janelle, who greatly influenced her acting career.
In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald in 2020, Nicole opened up about her relationship with her mom and said she has always encouraged her and helped her to achieve her goals.
“She’s given me the fire to pursue the career I have because I’ve always wanted to please her,” she said.
"But she also carved her own path and wanted her daughters to have the same opportunity to carve their own paths."
Nicole's father, Antony Kidman, passed away in 2014 at the age of 75.
