Synthetic dye in food, beverages linked to cancer; banned in US

Red Dye 3 was banned in cosmetics 35 years ago.

The Food and Drug Administration of the United States has recently banned Red Dye 3 after studies revealed that it is linked to laboratory rats developing cancer. This synthentic dye is widely used by U.S, manufacturers in food, beverages, and even medicine.

Malaking balita recently ang pag-ban ng U.S. government sa isang synthetic dye na tinatawag na Red Dye 3.

Natuklasan kasi sa studies na ang sangkap na ito ang sanhi ng pagkakaroon ng cancer ng male laboratory rats, ayon sa U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Ang Red Dye 3 (Red Dye No. 3 o erythrosine) ay color agent na inilalagay sa mga pagkain at inumin para magkaroon ng matingkad na kulay pula.

Sa report ng USA Today, lumalabas na may 2,000 products sa U.S. na nagtataglay ng Red Dye 3.

Kabilang na rito ang mga candy, lalo ang Valentine candies, desserts, tulad ng cookies, frosting, ilang flavors ng ice cream, snacks, at beverages.

Ginagamit din ito maging sa oral medicine tulad ng cough syrups at gummy vitamins para magkaroon ang mga ito ng matingkad na color red.

Binanggit naman sa BBC report na mas lower ang risk ng mga humans na exposed sa synthetic dye na ito.

Pero nakasaad kasi sa U.S. law na maba-ban ang anumang produktong mali-link sa cancer.

Bibigyan ng FDA ang mga manufacturers ng hanggang January 2027 para mag-formulate ng healthier alternative.

Kaugnay nito, ang drug manufacturers naman ay may deadline na hanggang January 2028, ayon sa FDA.

Kailangan ding sumunod sa ban ang U.S. pagdating sa pag-i-import ng mga produkto nito, dagdag ng FDA.

BAN request HAS BEEN SOUGHT A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO

Taong 2022 nang magsumite ng petisyon ang ilang grupo, kabilang na ang Center for Science in the Public Interest, na i-ban ang Red Dye No. 3.

Widespread ang paggamit nito sa U.S., at kabilang sa mga products na may ganitong sangkap ay kinakain ng mga bata.

Una nang na-ban ng FDA ang Red Dye No. 3 sa mga cosmetics 35 years ago.

Noong October 2023 ay na-ban na rin sa California ang food additive na ito.

Restricted na rin ito sa ibang bansa, tulad ng Australia, New Zealand, at sa European Union.

Para sa mga health advocates, good news ito.

Sabi ni Dr. Peter Lurie, president ng Center for Science in the Public Interest, “At long last, the FDA is ending the regulatory paradox of Red 3 being illegal for use in lipstick, but perfectly legal to feed to children in the form of candy."

Bilang substitute sa Red Dye No. 3, ang ibang kumpanya ay gumagamit ng red dye 40, na itinuturing na “healthier alternative.”

Pero may ilang laboratory tests na nili-link naman ang red dye 40 sa diarrhea ng mga laboratory rats.

May pag-aaral din ang Food Standards Agency ng UK kung saan inili-link ang red dye 40 sa increased hyperactivity ng mga bata, ayon sa BBC.
