SHOOTING APOCALYPSE NOW IN THE PHILIPPINES

Lahad ng nakatatandang kapatid ni Charlie na si Ramon Sheen sa aka Charlie Sheen: “Being on location with Dad really became our film school especially during Apocalypse Now.

“It was just one of those life-changing experiences. My dad always made that very clear that he wanted us all to be with him in his work.

"He didn’t want the family dynamic to suffer just because he had this job somewhere else, and I thought we were incredibly lucky to be able to go along with."

Bahagi naman ng kuwento ni Charlie: “So I’m in the Philippines on Apocalypse. I think I was eleven by then.

"This scope of the production, the length of the production, the exposure to the talent, written by, directed by Francis Ford Coppola.”

MARTIN SHEEN'S DRUG ADDICTION

Lahad ni Charlie: “I sensed it. There is a moment in the Philippines that is as crystal clear as though as it happened yesterday.

“And we were outdoors at lunch early, at one of the tables. I remember Dad sitting down right next to me. I remember, I could smell the booze and he wasn’t home, he wasn’t there.

“He had a ka-bar knife and he put it between his teeth and he turned to me with that knife in his teeth and I was just like… It was... He was... He had departed.

“So then, I come to find out that that was in the middle of the opening sequence.”

“He was there for a couple of months without us and then started hearing rumors that Dad was sick.

“When we came back to the Philippines and saw him for the first time, he was taking baby steps on a cane. He was crying, he was devoid of that dad light. He was gone.

“I had brought a couple of baseball gloves. I was playing baseball at the time.

“So we’d go out somewhere on the grounds and we’d start throwing the ball.

“The first day, it might have been at five feet for ten throws. The next day, it might have been at ten feet for 15 throws.

"And this went on and on and on until we were at a decent distance and, you know, just playing catch.

“He credits me with having a major hand in helping him during his rehab. To get his strength back, his focus back, just get his life back.

“Yeah, this f*ck*ng mattered. Yeah, it was… it just redefined that age-old moment of a father-and-son playing catch, but it’s hard not to visit that and not get a little choked up because I know what it meant to him, what it still means to him, you know?

“I think it’s hard for sons to always share with their fathers what’s truly in their heart.

“I hope he sees some of this as the love letter to him that it is,” salaysay ni Charlie, na nangilid ang luha habang binabalikan ang mga alaala ng pamamalagi nila sa Pilipinas ng kanyang ama.

CHARLIE SHEEN'S RETURN TO THE PHILIPPINES

Kuwento niya: “I had auditioned for Platoon and it was a train-wreck.

"And then Platoon was greenlit shortly after that, and Emilio [Estevez] was going to be playing the lead role.

"And then they lost their financing and the director, Oliver Stone, decided just to put the breaks on for a minute and then it came back around.

"And that’s when Oliver asked me to come back and do a second audition.”

“I was witnessing this Coppola-seque forty-million production as an 11-year-old.

“And now, going back, ten years later to do Platoon with my version, it was kind of scary because it was like a strange symbolic homecoming for me.

“During that shoot, I was presented with a contract written on a napkin in the Philippine jungle from Oliver Stone, to commit to Wall Street and I said okay, ‘I know what Wall Street is. Whats’s the movie about?’

“And he said, ‘It’s the story of a young trader seduced by the promise of quick gains.’

“For about three to four days, me and a couple of other people that were there ahead of time were out in the streets with the people, and it was an incredible feeling because it was a revolution that happened, for the most part, without violence,” lahad ni Dafoe.
