Humantong sa diborsyo ang anim na taong pagsasama nina Ricky at Jwan, pero hindi nila isiniwalat ang tunay na dahilan ng kanilang paghihiwalay.
Nakasaad sa kanilang joint statement: “For sometime, we have considered transforming our relationship, and it is after careful consideration that we have decided to end our marriage with love, respect and dignity for our children and honoring what we have experienced as a couple all these wonderful years.
"Our greatest desire now is to continue having a healthy family dynamic and a relationship centered on peace and friendship to continue the joint upbringing of our children.
“As always, we thank you for all the love and support we received throughout our marriage. We are united in nurturing this new chapter of our lives."

May kambal na anak si Ricky—sina Matteo at Valentino, na ipinagbuntis at isinilang sa pamamagitan ng gestational surrogate noong August 2008.
May dalawang anak naman sila ni Jwan: si Lucia, na isinilang noong December 2018, at si Renn, na ipinanganak noong October 2019.
Inamin ni Ricky sa publiko ang pagiging gay sa kanyang online post sa RickyMartinMusic.com noong March 2010.
