The Revenant leads this year's Oscar nominations with a total of 12 nods, including Best Picture.
Mad Max: Fury Road has 10 nominations while The Martian has seven.
The nominees for the 88th Annual Academy Awards were announced Thursday morning, January 14 (US time).
Aside from The Revenant, the other Best Picture nominees are as follows: The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, Room, and Spotlight.
The Revenant's lead star Leonardo DiCaprio is said to be the strongest contender for Best Actor, which also includes Bryan Cranston for Trumbo, Matt Damon for The Martian, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs, and last year's winner Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl.
The nominees for Best Actress include past winners Cate Blanchett for Carol and Jennifer Lawrence for Joy, along with Brie Larson for Room, Charlotte Rampling for 45 Years, and Saoirse Ronan for Brooklyn.
Competing for Best Director are last year's winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu for The Revenant, Adam McKay for The Big Short, George Miller for Mad Max: Fury Road, Lenny Abrahamson for Room, and Tom McCarthy for Spotlight.
The winners will be announced on February 28 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
