Sid Lucero on Angel Aquino: 'Magka-vibes kami'

When Angel Aquino was matched with newcomer Sid Lucero in the award-winning movie Donsol, it was a decision that would make waves in film festivals across Asia and across the globe as well.

With this tragic love story continuously receiving awards and film fest invitations worldwide, Sid and Angel are asked about what makes their tandem work.

Sid—Timothy Mark Eigenmann in real life—is the son of actor Mark Gil and former commercial and fashion model Bing Pimentel. Only 23, Sid says he had no problems working with a woman who is 10 years his senior.

“Working with Angel—it was a pleasure, it was an honor because she’s just a sweetheart. Sobrang dali niyang kausapin,” he candidly tells PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) during the screening of Donsol last November 28 at SM Megamall.

He continues: “Hindi siya yung type na nakakasindak maka-eksena. Siya pa yung mahilig mag-kwento. Una naming ginawa yung Siquijor [before Donsol]. Dun namin nalaman na magka-vibes kami."

Angel confirms this by saying that they both had time to bond with each other while they were shooting for Siquijor: Mystical Island earlier this year.

“[Sid and I] became good friends kasi nag-shoot na kami ng Siquijor before Donsol. During the filming, we learned that we would be working again together so excited na kami when we got to Donsol, [Sorsogon],” recalls Angel that same night.

About their love scenes together, Angel says, “During those times when we had to be intimate with each other, it was natural for us.”

Being true professional actors, Angel says that she and Sid had truly internalized their roles for Donsol. “You could see that it was Teresa and Daniel [their characters in Donsol] who were coming together—not Angel and Sid.”

In Donsol, Angel plays the role of a breast cancer patient (Teresa) who falls in love with a Butanding Interaction Officer (Daniel).

When asked to elaborate on his next project, Sid says: “My character [in Siquijor] is Miguel, a writer, and he’s ganun [he flicks his wrist, signifying that his character is a homosexual]. The very virile-looking Sid laughs heartily before saying that he had difficulty portraying the role of a gay person.

He will be seen onscreen again with Angel and another Donsol cast member, Simon Ibarra.

Directed by Brillante Mendoza, the indie movie Siquijor will be released by January 2007.
