Tanghalang Pilipino adds Pinoy humor to children's musical "Mulan"

The resident theater group of CCP stages this production until October 7, 2007.

As its second offering for the 21st theater season, Tanghalang Pilipino presents a children's musical that will surely delight young people of all ages—Mulan!

The resident theater group of the Cultural Center of the Philippines will stage this colorful children's play until October 7 at the CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino. See the spectacular adventures of the legendary character Hua Mulan, the heroine who joined an all-male army to fight for the honor of her family and country.

In the epic tale of Mulan, wars are fought not just by men but by the gods as well. The production showcases spectacular and innovative staging techniques, and features a brilliant choreography that fuses elements of martial arts and original music inspired by Oriental traditions.

Palanca award-winning playwright Rody Vera writes the production's libretto and recreates for the stage an original musical that illustrates convention-defying bravery and courage.

Jude Edgard Balsamo's music, inspired by Oriental traditions, is reminiscent of Chinese operas. The mystical charm of his sweeping melodies, combined with Jonjon Villareal's skillful lighting design, sets the tone of the production.

Mulan features premier dance artist Denisa Reyes's brilliant choreography that fuses elements of martial arts. The musical showcases spectacular and innovative staging techniques under the direction of Dennis Marasigan. New York trained designer Gino Gonzales' whimsical set pieces and costumes add a fascinating dimension to the production.

Based on the famous Chinese poem, "Ballad of Mulan," Mulan tells the story of a simple young woman who, despite her ordinary life, overcame extraordinary circumstances and was hailed for her greatness. Mulan features the Tanghalang Pilipino Actors' Company in this musical that is perfect for children and the young at heart, musical theater enthusiasts and for those who simply want to get in touch with their Asian roots.
