Former DENR Secretary Gina Lopez laid to rest

Gina Lopez, 65, was finally laid to rest.

The former Environment secretary was sent off to her final resting place by family, friends, and colleagues yesterday, August 24, at the ABS-CBN compound.

In a report by ABS-CBN News, members of Bantay Kalikasan, one of the foundations Gina established during her time, offered saplings of different trees instead of flowers in honor of her memory.

These saplings will be planted at the La Mesa Ecopark, one of the key projects Gina spearheaded under Bantay Kalikasan.

A necrological service led by her brother Ernie Lopez was held inside the compound on Gina's final night.

ABS-CBN Corporation chairman emeritus Gabby Lopez gave a eulogy for his departed sister that night.

He said, "I have come to realize that when Gina follows her heart, she finds that there are many people that are galvanized to do what they believe. It is because the Filipinos lead with their heart.

"Gina has always known this. It is how she can get all these people to follow and execute impossible tasks.

"The world is full of people who have done impossible things. If they followed their heads instead of their hearts, none of these days would have come true..."

ENVIRONMENT WARRIOR

Gina passed away on August 19, 2019. She was 65.

A staunch supporter for children's rights and welfare and an ardent advocate for sustainable tourism and environmental right, Gina established Bantay Bata 163 and Bantay Kalikasan during her time.

During her final years, Gina created the weekly show G Diaries on ABS-CBN to promote green living and sustainable tourism.

Then after her brief stint as Environment chief, the environmentalist-philanthrophist founded i.L.O.V.E organization, which stands for "Investments in Loving Organizations for Village Economies."

This non-stock, non-profit organization was established to continue her dream of building green eocnomies that are built with love.
