After 15 years, '90s singer Jocelyn Enriquez is back in the music scene with a new single.
The Fil-Am singer was dubbed as the Disco Queen of the ‘90s.
She visited the Philippines this month to promote her new single titled “To Love Again.”
In her interview with Showtime Online, Jocelyn recalled how she started out in the music industry.
She was a member of the group “Pinay Divas” in high school “who got together after school and just wanted to sing. We didn’t think it was going to be a career or anything… we were a four-part harmony. We would sing songs from En Vogue, a big R&B group in the '80s.”
Being part of the group was instrumental in the singer’s pursuit of a music career.
Did you know that she initially wanted to be known for a totally different music genre?
Jocelyn admitted, “It’s funny. When I first walked into my record label, I told them I wanted to be a balladeer.
"But, they knew better and convinced me that dance music was the way to go. So thankful that they advised me… it was pretty much an overnight success…I was just a high school graduate at that time."
When asked if she tried to shift or experiment with different genres, Jocelyn pointed out, “In the album, I was able to showcase that….Really capturing the moment again. Dance music was huge…Do something that works.”
What kind of music is she planning to release this time?
“After 15 years of hiatus, I really did a lot of soul searching. Something I wasn’t looking for. But basically, music found me again. At that time for 15 years, my husband and I have been in full-time ministry. It was as if God called me back into the stage."
How did she come up with her new single?
"'To love again' is what I wrote with my son and a good friend of mine in San Antonio. It basically describes this love story again, not only with the music, but with my audience. I’m so happy to be able to promote it internationally under Warner Music, Manila Genesis, and my management. I’m so excited.”
Jocelyn gamely sang a few lines of the new single.
"This is our chance to love again. A new love story. I’m overwhelmed I can’t believe it true.”
She described the song as “a story that is ongoing on this journey. My career wouldn’t have been possible if people didn’t come out to support it.”
She released her debut album, Lovely, in 1994. She became known for the singles “I’ve Been Thinking About You,” and “Make It Last Forever." Her single “Do You Miss Me” was a smash hit in 1996.
The Fil-Am singer collaborated with Amber and Ultra Nate for the remake of the song “If You Could Read My Mind” used in the film 54 that was released in 1998.
