Pelikula@Titus Brandsma offers free screenings on January 19

Three films tackling new beginnings will be screened in New Manila, Quezon City.

Pelikula@TitusBrandsmais a free monthly film screening that features fine samples of world cinema. After every screening, film enthusiasts can discuss the aesthetic and technical merits of each film. This monthly screening is an offering of the Titus Brandsma Center-Media Program under the auspices of the Carmelites in the Philippines. It is aimed at giving a meaningful experience for film enthusiasts.

The core members of Pelikula@TitusBrandsma select the films that will be screened on Saturday, January 19. For the month of January, the chosen theme is "New Year...New Life ...New Hope."


This month's screenings will be held on January 19, 2007 from 1 p.m. onwards at St. Elijah Hall, 26 Acacia St. Brgy. Mariana, New Manila, Quezon City.

A successful international conductor suddenly interrupts his career and returns alone to his childhood village in Norrland, in the far north of Sweden. It doesn't take long before he is asked to come and listen to the fragment of a church choir, which practices every Thursday in the parish hall. Just come along and give a little bit of good advice. He can't say no, and from that moment, nothing in the village is the same again. The choir develops and grows. He makes both friends and enemies. And he finds love.

Clive Owen stars as a prison inmate who goes into an experimental "open" prison where the inmates walk around freely and get job training for their impending release. While there, he discovers he has a talent for growing flowers. His talent is recognized by a gardening guru who encourages him and four other inmates to enter a national gardening competition.

Beth, Calvin, and their son Conrad are living in the aftermath of the death of the other son. Conrad is overcome by grief and misplaced guilt to the extent of a suicide attempt. He is in therapy. Beth had always preferred his brother and is having difficulty being supportive to Conrad. Calvin is trapped between the two trying to hold the family together.
